Thoughts on e-Cig?

My Mom - a lifelong non-smoker - has recently discover the joys of the e-cigarette. I can't find any decisive information online - some say it's harmless water vapor, some say it's full of carcinogens, and still others say it's unknown. My opinion is err on the side of caution and treat it the same as traditional cigarettes - don't do it around my son. Period. What are your thoughts?

You're overreacting. It's fine.

I say avoid direct exposure (second-hand vapor) but third-hand isn't/probably isn't an issue.

Completely agree. It's 100% in the same class as traditional cigarettes.

  • I voted completely agree. They are still new to us and I don't think we really know how safe they are yet. People used to think cigarettes were safe years ago. I would err on the side of caution.

  • My question is: if she never smoked before, why is she starting now?  With an e-cig no less?  That's just weird.

  • i agree to err on the side of caution as far as exposure to possible carcinogens, etc.  however, my bigger concern would be DS seeing an adult in his life smoking.  children can't differentiate between real and e-cigarettes, and seeing one of his role models smoke will send the message that smoking is okay- and i don't want him thinking that.  i'd absolutely ask that she refrain from using them around my kiddo.

  • @stgn01 It's definitely weird, but my parents are going through some weird phase.  They're basically living like partying college kids.  It's bizarre.

@ec0983 Good point.  I was so caught up in the direct health concerns that I hadn't thought about the example that they are setting.

Well, an update (if anyone cares for one): I spoke with my Mom and apparently they (my parents) don't smoke them often, and won't smoke around him and she told me that they only smoke them outside.  Thanks for y'all's input!  My biggest concern was potentially overreacting so it was good to hear that most everyone feels about like I do. :-)
