Similac for Supplementation Pre-Made

LO had a doctor appointment today, and unfortunately she had lost a good amount of weight. I will now be supplementing 1 oz formula after ever breastfeeding session. The doctor gave me Similac for Supplementation pre-made bottles to try. The bottles are pre-made in 2 oz, but I will only be using 1 oz per session. The packaging says to use within 1 hour of opening and then discard. Does anyone know if it is Ok to refrigerate the excess oz? (It does not need to be refrigerated unopened) I would hate to throw away 1/2 of each bottle. She gave me about 16 sample bottles, so I would be wasting quite a bit if I am throwing it away.

Re: Similac for Supplementation Pre-Made

  • I had to do this as well. If you pour out 1oz into a seperate bottle and then refrigerate the remaining 1 oz it is still good up to 24hrs.  But if you attach a nipple and LO eats from it then it is only good for 1 hour after that because of the bacteria from LO's mouth.

  • I used the same thing. I did what pp said. Just warm what you want to use in a seperate bottle.

  • Thanks for the responses. I did mean using the 1 oz in a separate bottle, I should have been more clear!

Thanks so much for all the detail. I have been working both with a LC and my pediatrician. LO is one month old. She was 6.15 at birth, 6.1 at 5 days leaving hospital, 6.10 at 2 weeks, and 6.1 today.

Per LC/Pedi recommendation, at every feeding, I will be offering breast for as long as she will take it, then 1 oz formula, then pumping about 1/2 hour later. I had already started pumping, and have been for about 4 days now. Formula was recommended now because her weight loss was fairly dramatic. She does wet/bm diapers at the recommended frequency, and does not have any signs of dehydration. I currently feed on demand, going no longer than every 3 hours (she varies from wanting to eat every 1.5-3 hours).

I have had to wake her during breastfeeding from day 1, we keep a cold washcloth nearby to wake her when she falls asleep.

I do appreciate all of your feedback!
