Sleeping Difficulties

So recently DS who is 27 months and typically sleeps through the night 11 hours with a 1.5 hr nap during the day is fighting sleep hard!

He usually goes down without a fuss and wakes up happy. The past week he has been fighting with us about going to bed and crying for us to come back into the room. He has also been waking up super early crying for us saying "no go to bed". Typically I'd probably just let him CIO in the AM but since he's potty training as soon as I know he's awake I get him to go potty.

Any thoughts on what's going on? Or how to fix this?
And just for the record, he's not teething or sick.

Re: Sleeping Difficulties

  • Ugh, I have no idea Cwhit!  E has been STTN for 4 months, and now is suddenly waking up at 11 every night and crying for half an hour.  The fact that your little guy is potty training too definitely adds more complication.  I hope someone has some good advice for you.

Is it possible he's ready for a shorter nap?  Or maybe needs a different bedtime?

  • Ugh I know it's tough! Well he already goes to bed fairly late so in the back of my mind I'm thinking, as much as I hate to say it, no nap? I still feel like he gets cranky midday though so I'm not sure. Is it too early for him to drop a nap altogether? Seems like it to me, but what do I know. Ha! Maybe I'm in denial.

  • Is it possible he actually needs an earlier bedtime?  I have no clue about the nap for his age, but E has started fighting her nap, and it's been a nightmare!

  • What about a night light? My lo was doing the same thing so I put one in his room and it worked. Just a thought.

It's possible he is starting the process of dropping his nap. DS naps at 1. We wake him up from his nap at 3:30 so he will go to bed by 7:30/8:00. So he still naps but not for as long. This is working for now anyway.

  • My DS dropped his nap at 2 yrs 10 months when he gave up his binkie.  DD#1 dropped hers at 3 years when we made her give up her binkie.  DD#2 will have that binkie until college ;)

My DS went through a phase like that right around age 2 - we got him a night light and a new fun pillowcase so that he was excited about his room...and it did work.  Although we did that after a few nights of torture so maybe he was just going to start sleeping again anyway and it was a coincidence that it was that easy!

Good luck - sleep regressions are awful!

Thanks for the suggestion. We actually just put a night light in his room a couple of weeks ago cause he was complaining that "it's dark in here"

How did you know when they were ready to drop the nap? I definitely feel like DS has a lot of energy at bedtime 9-930. But midday sometimes he's just so cranky I can't imagine no nap
