Official Introduction

Hi Everyone :)  My name is Katie, DH is Ryan.  We've been together for almost 9 years, and married for two of them.  We were successful on our first try and were blown away with the shock of a lifetime when our OB showed us the second heartbeat at 6w5d.

I just had my 11w appointment on Friday (picture below) and they are happy and healthy looking so I decided to officially join your group if you'd have me.  Baby A is measuring 2 days behind baby B, but the doctor isn't worried about a thing.  A is pictured at an awkward angle so looks much smaller in than B.

I have my NT test on Thursday, so keep us in your thoughts.  I hope to find out if they are fraternal or identical at this appointment.  We don't have a history of twins, nor did we do IVF, so I am assuming they are identical.  I am so very happy to have you ladies as a resource :)

Re: Official Introduction

  • Welcome and congrats!  By your u/s pic I would say your twins are di/di because they have a thick membrane between them. That means they each have their own placenta and amniotic sac.  Has your OB told you the number of placentas yet?  Identical twins can be di/di but you won't know until after they are born.  Most identical twins share one placenta though and that's the only way you would know prior to their birth.  You also don't need to have a family history of fraternal twins to have them spontaneously.  Sometimes it just happens and you get lucky!  This mom's diagrams might help explain the whole di/di and mo/di thing to you: https://pyjammy.com/types-of-twinstriplets/

  • AshB62, Thank you!!

Mrs. Alice, Great information, thank you!  My OB told me her machine isn't efficient enough to pick up the number of placentas, so I would have to wait until I visit the perinatal group to find out.  She was very happy about the thick membrane separating the two though, so we will see!  I am going to send the website to DH to check out.  Thanks again!

  • Welcome and congrats!!

Yes! Your twins look di/di to me, too!! Mine are also not IVF but presenting fraternal (two sacs, two placentas) which frankly I am good with since it is the safest way to go. But yes, they could be ID and we wont know until they are born :D

  • Welcome. I was going to say Di/Di based on your US. The "Twin Peak" looks pretty apparent. I think that means you have two placentas. Mine only had one so I don't have much to go off of, because mine was significantly different from yours but you can look here too :

  • Hi ladies, just an update for ya :)

NT Scan went really well, the babies hearts and brains are perfect and there is no sign of Down Syndrome in the neck fluid.  Annnd, you were right!  Fraternal twins!

babywillmake3 the moment the tech set the wand on my stomach he saw it was fraternal because of the peak!  You're good.
CaliCarly77 The tech and doc mentioned the same thing about not 100% knowing until birth, too.  I am so happy to be the lowest high risk case now, too!
Mrs. Alice the doctor mentioned the really thick membrane and was happy about that!
