pajamas

Maybe it's just me, but I am always nervous that Z isn't dressed right for bed.  I'm always afraid that she's either too warm or too cold, especially now that the weather has been getting colder.  So my question is, how do you gauge how you dress your LO at night?

(I know it's not for a while yet, but out of curiosity and since it will make picking pjs easier, when is it okay to start using regular blankets at night?)

Re: pajamas

  • It's cooling off here but not for good. And by cool I mean lows are in the 70s at night. When it's cold enough that the house temp drops lower than with the A/C we will use warmer pjs.

No blanket for us. LO really likes to take things and put it over his face so I don't trust him and won't for a while. APA says 1 yr and we likely won't use one before then.

  • If its lower than 50 degrees at night then I put footie pjs under a sleep sack otherwise its a long sleeve onesie and sleep sack. I gave DS an A&A blanket to cuddle about 2 weeks ago. I don't put it over him for warmth just nestled into one arm so he can chew on the corner to go back to sleep. It made a huge difference in his sleep. I gave my DD a crocheted blanket at 5 months for the same reason and it is her security item. It has huge holes it so I wasn't too worried about her breathing.
It's totally up to your comfort level. We use real bumpers too so maybe you don't want to take advice from me.

I check her video monitor before I get her PJs on every night because it displays her room temp. If it's 69 or lower she gets put in her fleece footed PJs in side of her cotton halo swaddle sleepsack. If it's 70 or higher she goes in cotton footed pjs or cotton footless ones and in her sleep sack. It took me about a month to figure out the above. I was putting her in fleece or cotton footed sleepers inside of a fleece sleepsack and she was so sweaty. She wakes up when she gets too hot. Because she's swaddled and doesn't move at night I sometimes lay a blanket over her midsection and feet if it's really cold (go ahead flame away if you must). Its impossible for us to regulate the temp upstairs at home. It's a constant battle so I'm always concerned about her warmth.

ETA when she's no longer being swaddled I plan on putting her in fleece footed pjs

  • Right now I just have him in his usual short sleeve onesie in the Merlin sleepsuit. But it's just starting to get cooler here: lows are upper 50s, low 60s. We haven't put the heat on yet. We have the air set at 73 and the lowest it's been in the house so far is 69. I did notice his arms seemed a little colder, but the rest of him seemed fine.

Anyone who uses the sleepsuit, what are you dressing them in? I'm thinking I may start using a sleeper under the Merlin now.  I'm not sure what to do if it gets colder. I forget what we used to set the heat on in the winter. I'm always afraid of him being too hot, because I know it's better to keep them cool to lower SIDS risk.

  • V sleeps with us, nestled against me, so I only put her in terry-cloth footed pjs. E sleeps mostly in her crib but spends part of the night sleeping in the crook of my arm if we both fall asleep during a feeding, so she's harder to dress, but we usually do cotton or terry cloth footed pjs under a cotton sleep sack.

It has been in the 40s at night here and we keep the temp around 72-74 but our upstairs gets cooler. Without the sleep sack, E's hands and nose were cool when she woke to eat.

  • Getting cool here with lows in the low 50's. LO has been in her merlin sleepsuit and was in just a onsie underneath but is now in a cotton sleeper. Her hands have been cold in the morning but the rest of her is warm. I've heard of people putting socks on their hands, but I don't think she'll keep them on. I don't know what we'll do when it's time to turn the heat on. We usually keep it at 62ish at night and 66ish during the day.

  • We keep the room at c.66 degrees. I put E in a onesie, sleeper, 1.9tog sleep bag.

  • She's typically just in a terry cloth or cotton footed sleeper, but now that it's getting colder at night, I put a sleep sack on her also to act as a blanket. We have also had the furnace going a couple nights, set at 70. Her cheeks are still a little cool when she wakes up, so I know she isn't getting too hot.

  • man, you guys keep your kiddos warm! Our pedi suggests cooler temps to reduce the risk of SIDS, so we keep her room somewhere between 65 and 70. It's been down to the 40s at night, but 70s during the day so we just keep her window cracked a bit to help cool down the room. She sleeps in just a cotton or terrycloth sleeper every night. Sometimes her hands, legs and feet get a little cold, but our pedi said that at this age they can regulate their own body temperature and it's okay if they're a bit chilly to the touch.

  • We do carters fleece sleepers with feet. Im worried in winter well need to use blankets. We shall see.
  • We haven't turned our heat on yet but after reading this we definitely like it cooler than most. Sometimes I wake up and its 65 in our house. C wears fleece footy PJs and a swaddle still. I find he sleeps better if the house is a little cooler.

  • @makeupgeek R is in the Merlin suit too and we do a onesie and socks. I think tonight we may take him out of and try his sleep sack again. He likes to sleep on his side and he can't in the sleep suit.

See I would do socks but he likes to draw his feet up into the Merlin sometimes and I'm afraid of them waking him up if he keeps pulling his feet in and out during the night. I may try them though.

Also I may try to see how he sleeps without the Merlin. He's very close to the next size and I want to know how he does without it before I buy another one. If he does fine without it, I'll probably start putting him in a sleeper maybe with a sleep sack.

  • It's getting into the 40s here at night and we keep the house around 70-71 during the day. C sleeps in a cotton sleeper in a halo sleep sack. We haven't turned on the heat and don't plan on it anytime soon. The coolest it's gotten in his room at night is 67. His hands, cheeks, and occasionally his legs are a little cool in the morning but he sleeps 12 hours at night. I think it being cool at night really helps him sleep better.

LO sleeps in a footed sleeper - either terry cloth or cotton. We also keep his room pretty cool - we haven't needed A/C or heat at night lately, and keep the thermostat around 75 with a fan running in his room. Before the footed sleepers, we used a onesie and a swaddle blanket. We'll probably get him some fleece footed pjs once it gets really cold. I'm hesitant to buy ahead; he's nearing the weight limit for 9 month pjs but is at the lower end of the length... so I'm not sure how quickly he'll need 12 month (?!?!?!)

ETA I remember reading if their hands/feet feel a little cool to the touch, but their belly feels warm to the touch, they're probably just fine. I think that was for newborns, but I'd imagine it still applies?

  • I'm so jealous of all these babies that will sleep in cribs. DS2 will only sleep next to me, so he just wears cotton PJs. I keep him warm enough. If he did sleep in a crib, he'd wear one of those sleep sacks.
  • We eliminated the Merlin suit a couple weeks ago, and LO is sleeping better. I was doing cotton PJs and fleece sleep sack. But the other night his arms felt really cold. So last night and tonight we did fleece pjs and cotton sleep sack. I figure it's the same layers but warmer on the arms. I was worried about him being too warm and the SIDS stuff, but he definitely sleeps better if he's nice and warm. When he goes to bed the monitor says 70-72. But now when he wakes up in the morning (heat still off) it's 68ish.

For PP with the sleep suit on we did a onesie. And sometimes socks.

  • DH keeps it freezing in the house. I've gotten used to it and LO seems to like it cooler. It put her in cotton footie pj's and a sleep sack.

I'd put a Movember mustache fail, but then
you'd all have to look at it until February.
  • Personally I don't feel the outside temp matters whatsoever... it's all about what temp the baby's room is! We tend to keep our home fairly warm so DS2 just wears cotton footie pjs and a cotton sleepsack.
