Breastfeeding question for STM's

I could not produce enough milk with my first child :( planning on trying again! Anyone know of any success stories of anyone not being successful the first time? I hope these things work like they are suppose to this time.

Re: Breastfeeding question for STM's

  • My sister struggled with her first child, and could not BF. her 2nd, she had a bit of supply problem early. Her pedi & LC suggested supplementing with formula, and exclusively pumping, while also offering her breast on a very regular basis to build her supply. It ended up working. She started EBFing after about a month and BF until her LO was 12 mos old.

  • I can't really answer your specific question, but I do know that my milk came in earlier and stronger the 2nd time around. When I complained about this (sorry...oversupply is a problem, but obviously a lesser problem than undersupply) to the lactation consultant and asked her for tips on my plugged ducts (a symptom of me rapidly having my milk come in), she said "every time a woman has a child, she creates more milk ducts in her breasts" or something along those lines. I didn't really press her on it, but it seemed like she was saying that you potentially have more milk supply with each kid (and then it regulates). So my hope is that perhaps you would have enough milk this time around.

  • I had a terrible time with DS.  Now, in hindsight it was all because of retained placenta (apparently surgery still missed of it that a 2nd surgery after I weaned finally took care of).  At 6 weeks I was only getting 8oz a day.  I still made it over a year but we always supplemented.   This time I've actually ended up with an oversupply because I was so paranoid about low supply that I pumped after most feeds the first few weeks.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • My milk came in earlier with the second one. And with DS1 my left side was kind of a dud and didn't keep up with the right side. This time my left side seems to be producing more.

  • I produced substantially more with my second than my first. Now with my third, my supply is good, probably about the same as with DS2. My milk came in faster each time as well.

With DS1, I had many issues, and never produced enough. He refused to nurse by 3 months because my supply was nearly non-existent. With this LO, we had a hard time the first few weeks because he would not stay awake long enough to get full. I had to pump and finger feed him. Now that he's older, it's much better. I have to take domperidone to keep my supply up for now, but we are exclusively nursing and he's gaining well. I was incredibly nervous that things would go the same way but we stuck with it, and it's been worth it!
ETA- both kids were born with a substantial lip tie- with DS1, I couldn't find anyone to clip it. With DS2, I noticed right away, got it clipped when he was 4 days old, and it improved his latch SO MUCH. That was a big factor as well.
