Travel question and advice

We are taking our first flight tomorrow to visit my parents in California. The TSA website says we can bring as much breastmilk as needed for the flight. In your opinion/experience, how much is this? I plan to nurse LO while we are together traveling but I'd like to bring a stash along with us. There will be a time later in the day and evening when I"m not with LO and I dont want the pressure of pumping enough in the afternoon (when I naturally produce less.) I guess I could also bring a couple of frozen packets in my bag. What would you do?

Also, any other tips, tricks or advice from moms that have already traveled by air?

Re: Travel question and advice

  • I am not sure on the amount of bm to bring because I don't use many bottles yet but with my first she screamed during take off from the pressure but the return flight she was sucking which helped. I think the pressure wasn't so bad with sucking and swallowing motion and she felt more comfort.

  • Doesn't it really depend on how long the flight is, how long you're going to be there, and how often your LO eats?

  • With our oldest we moved when he was 3 mo and I brought my entire stash of 50-60oz on the plane. No one batted an eye.

I've never had an issue w liquids on a plane if I have a baby. Even when they get old enough for whole milk, etc, no one has ever hassled me for liquids for babies.

Bring as much as you think you'll need. If you do bring frozen, you'll have to use within 24 hours once completely thawed. Ice packs and/or ice are also okay on planes.

  • I second the bottles during take off and landing! My SIL visited recently with her LO and she said this helped immensely with the pressure changes.

I would say to bring as much as you feel comfortable wasting just in case your LO doesn't want to nurse much during the flight. That white noise is wonderful and will likely put your LO right to sleep.
  • The San Jose airport has an awesome baby care room at the far end of one of the terminals past security. Check out maps of the airports you'll be flying through to see if they have childcare/family spaces.

TSA may want to put a test strip over you thawed milk so if you plan to use it day of flying, transport the milk in bottles instead of bags. They may ask to test the frozen milk, but that is unlikely. Bring emergency ziplock bags to put ice in (from a restaurant past security) if you find your icepack melting if flying late in the day night and your ice melts. They may also want to hand inspect your pump so I try not to burry it in my carry on. Assume your LO will eat 4oz to replace a feed but don't be surprised if he eats less.

IME pumping in-flight at your seat, assuming DH is your seat mate, is preferable to pumping in the gross family washrooms if you have to do that.

  • LO and I are flying on Monday. To be honest I am not packing bottles. I'll have my pump in my checked luggage. I just plan on whipping me out when needed. I'll be solo w him so the less I have to lug around the better. I'll have him in the Moby w a diaper bag. That's it.

    Hopefully that's not too neive.
  • Thanks everyone. I'll bring enough for one bottle and of course I'm his traveling milk truck anyway. I'm just thinking of setting myself up with additional milk for once I get there.
I realize I have a sense of security here at home knowing that I have a freezer stash to pull from if needed. Going elsewhere I feel more vulnerable not having that stash built up. So I was thinking of taking extra with me, but forgot about needing to use it within 24 hours. I still might take one or two packets and then refridgerate what I pump tomorrow.

@LBib - good to know re: SJC. We are flying in/out of there so I'll have to track down the baby care room. Thanks for hte tip!
