Babies: 6 - 9 Months

No da da or ma ma..

My son just turned 7 months 2 days ago he doesn't and hasn't put any words together yet.. He basically laughs.. And growls and shrieks and goes ahhhhh .. ahhhh.. Should I be worried? He seems to have hit some milestones sooner than he should have.. He was sitting unassisted at 5 months.. Crawled at 6 and is already attempting to walk.. He looks when you call his name and laughs etc just worried about his speech at this point

Re: No da da or ma ma..

  • My son didn't put sounds together until 8 months. He just turned 9 months and now really only says baba and dada. Occasionally, he'll say mama, but only if he's really upset. Sometimes he'll say 'da da dad' but he also screeches and yells still at this point.

  • My 7 month old doesn't do da-da or ma-ma at all...not even the endless dadadadadada

She was well ahead on some milestones as well.  She is non-stop chatter, noises, laughing, giggling etc but no real words.  She has her own word for feed me "it's a wide open mouth going ahhh, ahhh, ahhh"  but otherwise she is just a bunch of noises.

I don't think there is any concern at this age.  We really don't spend much time trying to get her to say dada or mama either.

As long as baby is making noises I think all is good at this age!  Also...babies tend to focus on movement or language and neglect the other.  So if your son is crawling and trying to walk then he is likely just to busy to 'talk'.

  • My DD turned 7 months on the 3rd and she doesn't say those either. She is a serious one and it's hard to get her to laugh. She does smile a lot though. She shrieks, growls and goes aaah aaah but no dada or mama or baba yet.
  • Babies chose what they want to advance in. Sounds like he's more into being physical than verbal. Nothin to wory about.
  • My dd started saying dada at 6 months and was also sitting at 5mo but has not started to crawl.  Each kid is different.  Unless your dr is worried you shouldn't worry.

  • DS2 babbles mama (I'm sure he's not actually referring to me, just babbling) but that's really the only consonant sound we've got so far.
  • My LO is just like yours. Crawling early, just today made walking attempts with her little walker just before 7 months. Good hand eye coordination, laughs at everything, meets all milestones but no babbling (right now she makes a whiney "mmmmmm" sound and a really raspy "haahaha" when something's fun). The doctor said that she expected her to babble later due to her meeting her physical milestones early

  • Same here at 8 months. Very physical but no words. Im not worried...yet

  • DD only started consonant-babbling shortly after 8 months. She's about 8 1/2 months now and says the m, b, and g sounds. I was worried too because it seemed like lots of other babies on my BMB were "talking" earlier, but I don't think you need to worry unless your LO is closer to 9 months and still not making any consonant sounds.

  • My 7 month old has literally just begun to punctuate his squeals and screams with some consonants. They are so random I don't even think he is doing it consciously. Today he went "guh-guh-guh" at the vacuum cleaner of all things. I wouldn't worry until at least 9 months.
