June 2014 Moms

Just realized the family vaca's timing... :/

So, my husband's family has been planning this elaborate vacation for years. His parents are paying for us all to go Nov 2014 to a resort in Cuba or Mexico or... anywhere similar, lol, they havent decided.

Except! I'll have a 5 month old! We were planning to bring our daughter, who will be 3, but how totally unrealistic is it to think I can still go with baby # 2?

  • Why wouldn't you go?  It will probably be a fantastic vacation and I'm sure DH family would be willing to help you out with the baby.  I know I wouldn't hesitate in a moment to go especially with family.

  • I agree with PP. My family does a get together every year at the end of June. I'm going to have to ask them to move it if this baby sticks because I am due June 20th. But that's the only time I would change plans.

  • I think traveling when they are little is the easiest time to go anywhere.  They will sleep anywhere noise or not, and they are non-mobile, plus you'll have helpful hands. I wouldn't worry about it at all!

  • I would totally go.  Plenty of support to help with both the baby and your 3 year old.

  • Definitely go!  I'm sure someone will help watch the baby so you can go on some of the adventures.  Mexico is beautiful, and all resorts stock water bottles so you don't have to worry about that aspect.  You can relax by the pool, enjoy the sun, it'll be so nice after the baby is born!

  • I think whether or not I'd go would depend on the type of vacation planned and family dynamics.

I'd also go into it planning that it will be different than if I didn't have a 5 month old with me. If family offers to help out, great, but I'd assume me or my husband would be staying in our room during naps or when baby needs to be out of the sun and not counting on others to help out during their vacation.

Maybe if there are other people who will have a baby or small child with them you guys could share watching all the kiddos so each set of parents can get a break.

  • I would absolutely 100% be going! I traveled to the beach with my 4 week old and 3 yr old last year and then again 5 weeks later. He had been on 2 vacations by the time he was 2 months old. We are travelers and I wouldn't bat an eye about flying with a baby. It's my 4 year old I'd be most concerned about.  There are many flying with kids tricks. I mean, don't get me wrong...it's a lot more work and packing but hey, you're building memories.

  • Thanks, guys. I feel so much better. Everyone I've ever heard talking about travelling with babies were always saying "Just don't. Its awful."

  • I would totally go! I traveled with a 9mth and it was fine. What a great getaway after having a baby. You and baby enjoying and relaxing beach/pool side. Plus, you know family will want to jump in and steal those cuddles from a new baby and just have fun with a 3yr old. That gives you time all to yourself. Any minor inconveniences can not compare to the fun and the memories you will gain by going.
  • I love traveling with babies, it's the older ones that are a struggle.

  • While it isn't the most ideal situation, the actual flying thing will be much easier (IMO) with a 5 month old than your 3 year old daughter. I travel quite often with my daughter by plane starting when she was 3 months old, it became a pain when she started getting mobile at 9 months. Give a 5 month old some milk and a plane will put them out pretty quickly with all the sounds.

I've heard if you breastfeed them it works just like us chewing gum, and the breastfeeding alone is already soothing to them, so it can actually be okay... I hadn't even thought of Ellie (the 3yo) flying. Oh boy.

    lol.

  • I had to start doing all day trips and weekend type trips pretty early with my DS. I'm convinced its easier to travel with a less than 6 month infant than with a toddler. I would think that your 3 yo would love being on the beach and spending time with grandparents.
Basically the idea sounds daunting but by 5 months you'll be a pro mommy of two.

Honestly, it feels like a whole new ball game, having 2. I don't think I'm very prepared for that, lol.

  • Can you vacation in Cuba? Are you from the US?

Not the point, sorry. I agree with the others and say go! There may be some issue traveling with a little one, but there are definitely some good points mentioned above. I know you say 2 is a different thing, and it is, but by 5 months and with help around you, you'll be fine!

  • @MrsAMB07 Lol, what?! I'm Canadian... Can people from the states not go to Cuba? I know Cubans are illegal there, but you can't go?

@ChristineMurray91  I don't think so. We have a trade embargo with them and tourism is restricted, due to them being a communist country, how their people are treated, and a history of "bad blood" between our governments. I think if you're a professional of some sort or have immediate family there you can request special permission.
I remember a few years ago Beyonce and Jayz went there and it was actually all over our news because they must have gotten some special pardon from Obama. But if you're Canadian, then I think you're fine! Haha

*Ugh, don't know why the quoting is all screwed up.

  • We had to attend a funeral out of state when dd was three weeks old. It was the longest car trip ever (stopping to bf every two hours), but it was much easier than trips at age 2! November should be a fine time to travel, I think.

  • Yeah americans can't go to cuba because of the embargo ever since the 1960s. There some exceptions like visiting family, mission trips, work trips, stuff like that but generally it is not allowed.

I think if your family is going it would especially be doable. You'll have extra hands plus maybe you get can a suite for everyone and then there would be a separate space to put the kiddos to bed early

  • Not at all, I'd go.  In fact it will be perfect because you'll have tons of family around to help you.  My MIL anyway is a mother hen and loves to help with the LOs.  At any rate, 5 months is a good age- probably sitting up but not yet mobile (my favorite ;)  and you'll have a decent routine going by then.  DD was a super laid back baby so taking her at 5 months would have been easy-peasy.
