Parenting after a Loss

WWYD?

Ok this is more PgAL vs PAL but because I'm PAL I'm having these thoughts... Jackson came 4.5 weeks early. I lost my mucus plug and 2 days later my water broke. I work retail and Jackson came right before true stress started. Black Friday. My water broke the Saturday before while I was working the previous few days trying to get my store ready. Fast Forward a year and I'll be 30 weeks right after Black Friday. With lots of stress, lots of standing and oh so friendly shoppers! (Sarcasm entered) they say once you go into preterm labor you are at a higher chance to go in early again. Knowing my stress can be much higher earlier on and that if I did go into labor 30-32 weeks Talia would be guaranteed a few weeks in NICU. Work isn't worth it. Of course I plan on talking to my Dr but would you play it by ear and work until you go into labor or leave early to prevent too early labor? Financially I'll get paid by my company because I would be pulled out due to a medical condition so money isn't an issue. Am I being over cautious? Or have the right to much rather keep Talia in as long as possible to ensure no NICU stay due to preterm labor? All aspects of input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: WWYD?

  • I would talk with your doctor and see if they'd pull you out before the craziness of Black Friday. Like you said, you'd be covered through short term disability, and you'd still qualify for your 8 weeks FMLA.. Like you said, it's not worth the risk. Just my opinion :-)

  • I also work in retail management but didn't have to think about the craziness of the holidays until after I had H. I did feel bad being on leave for some of the craziness but it is what it is and they understood. If you can leave early then I would. Its not worth risking early labor. Like you said, Talia comes first and your team should understand that you hate to leave them during this busy time but it is what you need to do and what is best for the both of you. :)

  • I'm pretty cautious but I don't know...30 weeks seems super early.  I know you went 4 and a half weeks early before but to go 10 weeks early this time?  It doesn't seem super likely.  But like you said, your doctor would know best.

  • First off, that is a lovely name for your DD!

As for timing, I agree with PPs on working through it with the Dr. Perhaps there is a happy medium of doing fewer hours once you hit 30 weeks and watchful waiting for any signs that this is too much? Then again I'm a workaholic and never had PTL. And retail is a lot more physically difficult than a desk job. At the end of the day, LO comes first and I think you're on the path to a plan that will work for you. Good luck!

Thank you. I love the name and that it's unique. Well I think it is and I am sure that it will become popular after.

I am a workaholic also and that's why I am worried, I won't relax, I won't sit still, I will still climb up and down the ladder etc. I feel lazy if I just sit and don't do much. But I also think I can pay attention to my body. 35 weeks and 30 weeks are a big difference. I guess I will have to see how I feel. DH thinks I am crazy to think of the worst case scenario but I just know me. I have a problem with "relaxing"

  • I would talk it over with my doc and play it by ear. Maybe reduce hours or tasks (um, like climbing on a ladder for work in 3rd tri!). You aren't being lazy by tweaking what tasks you do...you are being a cautious momma who wants to avoid NICU time for your sweet girl.

  • If it was me, I would probably cut back my hours starting at 30 weeks to about half. Then around 34-35 weeks I'd stop working. Talk to your doctor about your specific risks but like you said, sometimes it better to just play it safe.
