wraps and slings

So I bought the ergo and infant insert to carry LO in however the infant insert is so thick and hot (live in hawaii) I'm scared I'll over heat her if I keep her in it. So I'm looking around for a sling or maybe a wrap to use till she's big enough for the ergo. There are so many out there so I was curious what you guys are using, what works and what was a waste of money. Thanks in advance.

Re: wraps and slings

  • I don't own it yet but have ordered(and it's in route) the baby ka'tan. I've heard wonderful reviews about it both on other websites and TB. It can't get here fast enough let me tell you! Gl finding one that works for you!

  • I have the Ktan which is easy to put on, but might be hot (I live in MA so it is getting chilly and I was sweating a bit)

  • I also Have the K'Tan. It's pretty easy to use, the fabric is light weight. I live in Miami, so it's also super hot, but I don't feel like she overheats.

  • I have the moby and really like it but LO did come out a little sweaty after being in there a while. I just slightly under dress her when using.

  • Love ring slings. The learning curve can be steeper than some other carriers but they are so versatile. The Maya wrap is good, but you could also order a custom sling from a reputable dealer, e.g Jan from sleeping baby productions. A ring sling will be about $60 new. Check out thebabywearer.com for a great info in general and ladies in the forums who really know their stuff. They also have a FSOT site so you could buy another carrier for less than new retail.

  • I have a Moby wrap. Some say it is hard to wrap/tie, but I just watched a YouTube tutorial and had no problems with it.

  • We have a moby.  I'm also in VA and agree with pp that he gets a little hot, but he loves it!

  • I have a ring sling and a mei tai. The ring sling is great for this age and the mei tai will be good for when DS is a bit heavier.

  • I don't like the Moby wrap. I am almost certain I am doing everything correctly when I put it on but after a little while DD seems to start sliding down and I feel like I need to hold and support her which is basically just holding her like I would without the wrap. It kind of defeats the purpose and it makes me uncomfortable. I don't think DD overheats but holy crap am I ever hot! I live in MN and it's not hot here right now, it's pretty chilly, and I feel like I get way too hot with it. I also have a sling that I absolutely hate but it might be because it was the cheap one that you get for "free" from a website, the Seven Sling I think it's called.

I was given a Snugli carrier and I really like that. The one we have has vents and it is actually very breathable and not too hot. I like that it stays in place and it is supportive on my back, I don't feel uncomfortable and she is clearly also well supported in it. She is tucked in but still upright and it keeps her face from being buried in my chest too which makes me feel better.

DD loves both the wrap and carrier but I prefer the carrier. I think the Ergo is like the Snugli so you should be able to use it once LO is 7lbs which probably won't take too long. It all depends on what is comfortable for you and what LO likes so would try to go to BRU or another place where you can try them on. Unfortunately it's just one of those things where you won't know what will really work for you until you actually have it.

  • Thanks guys! Maybe I should just wait till she's a bit bigger...the ktan looks really nice also. The moby looks so I intimidating.

  • I also love my ring sling (I have a zolowear one that I bought on FSOT on the babywearer for I think about 30 bucks). I also have a Calin Bleu (gauze) wrap that I love for the summer. Something in gauze or linnen is going to be your best bet in a hot climate. A wrap isn't as hard as it looks. All you have to learn is 1 hold (way of wrapping) there are tons but you only have to learn one to use it. There are usally instructons that come with the wrap and if not there are tons of videos on youtube to show you how. A ring sling is slightly faster to put on and take off but a wrap is a little more hands free when once baby is in than the sling. Over on the attachment parenting board there are lots of very experienced baby wearing moms.

  • Ring slings all the way!! I LOVE my maya wrap! It is made of woven material and doesn't stretch. Downhill to put on and baby falls asleep right away in it. Very versatile and stylish too. :)

I've tried so many other carriers, wraps, slings... Not a fan of moby, boba, k'tan. They are made of jersey material, stretchy, and will definitely keep in the heat. Not a fan of carriers with buckles and this and that. Hope U find one that works for u!
  • I'm on the ring sling bandwagon, too. Baby and I both love it!

  • I may be the odd man out but I had my first two boys in Southern California and never found the Moby too hot.

I have a ring sling and I've had all 3 of my girls try it and they all hated it. I did manage dd2 in it a few times, but not for long. Just tried it with dd3 a few days ago, and she just screamed.
