Counting kicks

What is the purpose of counting the baby's kicks?  What are the benefits of doing this?  Other than being present with yourself and spending a little quiet time with you and LO.  Why count?

Re: Counting kicks

  • To ensure baby has regular and normal movement or activity. My OB says not to worry about them unless you feel like baby hasn't been moving normally.

  • It's a suggestion, just because less movement COULD be a sign that something MAY be wrong.

I've never counted kicks and think it's over kill. I keep track of the baby's active time, since it's pretty regular now and that's all.

  • I agree. I don't count mine either. She moves regularly. If she didn't I'd probably start counting.
  • Since I have been reading a lot about it on this forum, I asked my OB about it . He said the only time he recommends it is when there is not enough amniotic fluids .
  • I do it simply because my OB told me to. I'm a blind follower when it comes to kick counts. It's harmless, so I just do it.
  • I did it because I had a bit of a fall in my kitchen and landed on my belly pretty hard, so right after I went and did a kick count just to make sure baby was still moving in there, he was, and so the next morning I called my Dr, she said if I felt ok, no spotting and did the kick count and baby was moving, then not to worry.

So I don't do them daily, by any means, but occassionally when something happens or if I just feel like I haven't felt him in a while.

  • To make more moms paranoid. As long as baby is moving regularly, there is no point. You are going to make yourself go crazy.

  • This is my 5th child and my OB has never mentioned doing kick counts. Not even when I went to 42 weeks with #2.

  • I don't do kick counts unless LO is not moving as much. The first time I have done kick counts was yesterday. I got sent home from my NST but was told to do kick counts since LO wasn't moving as much.
