I put it in my birth plan, need to review it with the OB that will be doing our surgery and make sure she/he is ok with it.

All I know so far is what my SIL told me. She's a L&D nurse and said it's best to wait a few minutes until it stops 'working' to clamp. That way LO gets all of the final nutrients he should be getting. That's all I know though. Would love to hear what others say...

I've read things on both sides. The pros for delayed clamping is that of course it gives the baby extra blood & can prevent iron deficiency in babies, & the only con really is that it can cause jaundice. I asked my dr. about it & she said my hospital's general policy (I have Kaiser) is to delay cord clamping for a minute or two, so I thought that was sufficient.
We didn't delay clamping with our first, she had mild jaundice. We did with our 2nd, no jaundice. Totally anecdotal but we will delay with this one as well due to DD2's good response.
I have been reading about this and am planning to talk with my OB about it at my next appt. Although considering I have an umbilical cord anomaly, I am not sure if it would still be allowed/as beneficial in my case...
We are delaying for the reasons in SailorTinks article. I also have a friend who says it's supposed to decrease chances for other diseases and cancers but I haven't done any of my own research on that yet. Talked to my Dr. about it and she is fine with delaying for as long as we want, just as long as baby is healthy and doesn't need any intervention at birth. We banked the Cord blood with DD but just don't have the funds to this time and my hospital doesn't do donations so we figured why not let this LO have all his blood.
We plan to delay the cord clamping & spoke with my dr about it at our last appointment. It is not standard practice at our hospital (usually they immediately clamp & get baby to mom), so she said to just make sure we remind her.
Read about it. It sounds like a positive thing for baby, main down side being increased chance of jaundice, but we choose to donate.
I'd talk with your doctor about it soon, though, if you go that direction. I've heard many stories about doctors not always being open to it. You'll need to get him on your page.
Interesting thanks for everyone, I am going to talk to OB about it. I have blood clotting issues so it looks like I can't donate. I am going to research this more then!
