Braxton Hicks Question

I am 22 weeks and don't know if my concern warrants a call to the doctor.  I don't see him for 2 more weeks.  With DS, I never had Braxton Hicks and delivered via scheduled c-section at 38 weeks.  For the last several days, I have been having what feels like a tightening of my lower belly.  I assumed at first it was the babies moving and pushing on my bladder.  But the more it goes on and the more I think and worry, I'm afraid I should be calling the doctor.  Any insight to what I might be feeling would be great.  Also, I have a pretty stressful job and afraid this might have an affect.

I have been having BH since week 18 some even super painful. Never had them with my first though and so they freaked me out. I still get them regularly and most the time at 29 weeks ( sometimes I will have them timetable for a few hours and then they disappear). if your worried give them a call they will monitor you a bit and make sure it's not changing anything! It's very common for multiples especially if it's a subsequent pregnancy from how my MFM explained it too me. They are tricky that's for sure!

  • Oh also if babies are super active ( even if you can't feel them) they can trigger them and cause the uterus to become irritable. Warm bath, loads of water, and rest :)

  • I started having BH a few days before I hit the 22 week mark and it worried me too. I saw my OB and she said it is perfectly normal and to just pay attention to them. Four or more in an hour or painful BH are signs that you should call your doctor, but otherwise it is normal.

  • I had an irritable uterus and BH from about 20 weeks until delivery at 38 weeks 1 day. My doctor always told me if you are in doubt about anything just call. It is not our job to determine what is normal or not. If you are feeling more than 5 or 6 in an hour I woul call. FYI every time I went to L & D to be monitored I needed fluids for dehydration which then stopped the contractions ( never dilated). Drink lots of water and call if worried.

  • I had them from 16 weeks till my c/s at 34w4d.. they actually started to get really painful at the end for me. If you are concerned, call your doctor.

  • I started getting them at 18 wks, and they just got more and more frequent until the end (35w4). Ditto PPs on everything.....drink lots of water, take it as easy as possible after work, and definitely call the doctor if you are concerned (or if you get more than 4 in an hour). GL!

  • All of the above. Drink a lot more water. Are you having any UTI symptoms? I was having more BH than usual and found out I had a UTI that was irritating my uterus.

  • With my first I started getting them around 20w and delivered at 37w5d.

With my twins they started at 12w.  I went into PTL at 32w4d, spent 5 days on hospital BR, was on modified BR until 36w.  I still made it to my scheduled c/s at 38w.

This last pg (I delivered in May) I started getting them at 11w.  I carried to 41w and had a scheduled c/s because the baby was giving no signs of wanting out, my OB didn't feel comfortable with me carrying past 41w, and he wouldn't induce a VBAC because of the risk of uterine rupture.

Point is, if they're coming regularly or getting 5-6 in an hour call.  Otherwise you can have BH's for most of your pg and it not effect when you'll deliver.  Heck, the pregnancy that they started the latest in is the pregnancy I delivered the earliest.

THIS - I thought I was having BH, maybe I was?, but I was diagnosed with a UTI and the tightening in my lower abdomen went away. I had NO OTHER symptoms, they only caught it because my doc does a pee test every time I come in. That was around the same time as you. Last night I think I had my first BH, and it was quite different, not just at the base of my abdomen.
