Donate your formula samples!

I was just reading about how the WIC program in my state will be affected by the government shutdown. My state refuses to supplement the program with it's own money so WIC payments and vouchers have been suspended. The other day I received a box from Enfamil that had two 8oz samples of formula in it. As I will be breastfeeding and am also able to afford formula if for some reason I am not able to breastfeed DS2 this time around, I thought it would be a great idea to donate it to a local food bank for those in need. According to the article the WIC office has been telling mothers to head to the food bank to get formula and food for themselves and their children.

I would like to encourage other mama's that are in similar situations to do the same. If you haven't been sent any formula samples, you can sign up on Enfamil and Similac's website so you can receive them and then donate them to your local food pantry.

Re: Donate your formula samples!

  • I think this is an awesome idea. I didn't think about donating the formula samples. I however did find a local pregnancy crisis center where I donated a bunch of stuff that we wouldn't use. I wonder if they take Formula as well. Thanks for posting this. I'm going to sign up as well to try to get the samples to donate. GREAT IDEA!

  • I just asked this yesterday at a lll meeting. The church we meet at accepts donations. Maybe that's another donation
    avenue for people.

  • That's an awesome idea! I wouldn't have even thought of that.
  • I just got one of the free samples in the mail the other day.  I'm going to keep it handy in case I need it because something goes haywire with BFing, but if all seems to be smooth sailing I'll definitely donate and sign up for more free samples to donate.  Good idea!
  • This is a great idea! I get samples from my OB office nearly every visit now.
  • I just randomly got a box of formula samples in the mail today.... I'm donating them to the Crisis Pregnancy Center where I live :)
  • So @SittingOnAMtnTop I just clicked both links, signed up, and not 5 minutes later, my doorbell rings. It's the mailman with my very large box of formula samples from Similac!

    Talk about instant gratification!

So now hopefully I'll be getting another couple of samples soon!

    Too funny!!

Just in the last few years I learned what these places are really about. I'm staunchly pro-choice so for me it wouldn't jive with my politics to donate here. I encourage people to look into a place like this before donating. If it work for you, great.
    @babymama619

I am on the board for a pregnancy crisis center, and we are pro-choice. Not all pregnancy care centers are alike :)
Good to know. I only heard a little bit of info and then looked I to the two that are near me and I was horrified. However I do live across from a very controversial Planned Parenthood. People picket nearly every day even though it's been open for 6 years!

**Sorry in your quote box....I looked into this particular center and their background before donating. Thanks for the advice though!! Good call out!

  • I volunteer at a refugee centre and just gave them my formula samples the other day, they were happy to receive them. I'm sure food banks would love to receive them as well, but if you live in a bigger city where refugees tend to arrive, please think of them as an option as well. (I'm in Toronto).

  • Great idea!
  • I got a big box today too from Similac.  If you don't want to take them to a pregnancy crisis center there are other places too.  I'm taking them to a live-in rehab run by our local Parole/Probation department.  It's one of the only places around here where drug addicted moms can go rather than prison and take their babies with them.  And there's no pregnancy crisis center around that I know of.

Other ideas:  food banks, women's shelters, churches, local children's services programs (I know ours has a program where they help out family members with supplies and financial assistance who are raising children taken from the parents but are still in the care of family rather than the state.) Please donate if you aren't using the samples or can afford to buy formula on your own!

  • That's a great idea! For some reason, I haven't received any this time around. If I do I'll definitely donate it.

  • Great suggestion!
  • Thanks for the links... I signed up.
  • In Highschool & College I used to have to buy formula for my best friend's kids because was a teenage mom. That stuff is EXPENSIVE, and it would have been amazing to have it donated. Even though I am breastfeeding I had signed up for formula samples for that reason, as well. Thank you for the PSA!

I would also like to put out there if you have an open bag of diapers that your LO outgrows, please consider donating them as well. Some babies don't get changed as often as they should to try to 'save a diaper.'
