Help! Weaning from swaddle

My LO is just coming up for 5 months old. At night I have her sleeping in our room in the love to dream swaddle (firm zip up with arms enclosed at either side of head). During the day I have her napping in her cot and wrapped in a Joey pouch which allows more movement but keeps her arms enclosed. I'm trying to wean her off the swaddle because she's starting to roll over. She's not yet falling asleep without the help of singing/rocking etc. I've tried cold turkey under a blanket and I've tried one arm out. When I do, absolutely nothing helps her get to sleep. If I put her down to see how she goes herself, she gets so upset. I've just wrapped her in a Joey pouch again and she's finally off to sleep. Does anyone have any tips??? Should I try the weaning at night instead of during the day... Her night sleep is pretty good so I'm worried about losing that as well as troublesome naps!! Also.. When she has her hand free she keeps shoving her fingers so far down her throat that she gags... Not very effective in helping her soothe herself to sleep lol! Would love some advice......

Re: Help! Weaning from swaddle

  • I would get him to sleep in my arms then transfer to the crib. Sometimes I have to hold an arm down while rocking or nursing, but once he's asleep he's usually ok. My lo rarely falls asleep w/I being rocked/held though.

  • We bought the Merlin sleep suit and works great. LO can roll over buy not when she's in the sleep suit. Gonna have to wean her of this now too, but I think it's been a good transitional step
  • We have the same problem. DS does not sleep well if I lay him down asleep, he wakes a lot more frequently. We have been using the Merlins magic sleep suit also and it works great. I just have no idea how to transition from that. But I am not going to worry about it yet.
  • We're trying the Zipadee Zip based off recommendations here. I really liked the sleep suit and heard good things, but I have concerns about hip dysplasia and them not being able to pull their legs up in it like they're supposed to. Anyway, the Zipadee Zip seems to work better than cold turkey, but probably not as good as the sleep suit. DD loves to move her arms and legs around, though and they don't really bother her much anymore. We put it on her about an hour before bedtime and she smiles and laughs when she sees it.

  • I transitioned my lo with the halo sleep sack swaddle and left her arms out. Now she is also rolling and is a belly sleeper now. She does not use the sleep sack anymore but it was a good transition.

    New Mommy!!!

  • Magic sleep suit. Amazing
  • We did Merlin sleep suit until 5.5 months when she rolled in the suit. Then fleece with sack arms free. No transition issues

  • Did it take a while for her to settle with the hands out?
