Parenting after a Loss

Sick Baby last night (andreahshields)

Phoebe was really sick last night and it scared the crap out of me.  Everyday when I pick her up from daycare, we lounge about and she takes a quick 30 min nap in my arms.  Yesterday, after 30 mins of napping, she bolted upright and threw up all over us.  She continued for the next 3 hrs, getting sick every 5-10 mins.  We did call the on-call doctor and they ran through the list of symptoms to ensure it was nothing too serious: no fever, no excessive crying, no disorientation, no diarrhea.  They said all we can really do it let it run it's course and give 10ml of pedialyte every 5 mins even if she gets sick again.  Then after 4 hrs of not getting sick, double the pedialyte to 20ml every 5 mins, then when she's gone 8 hrs without getting sick, she can have her milk again.  So we had a rough night, but she seemed fine and happy this morning and was wetting diapers again like normal.  I went ahead and sent her to daycare but only gave them milk, some oatmeal, and pedialyte.  No other foods or water or anything.

Now I have to figure out what caused this.  Yesterday she had her normal 2 bottles of breastmilk, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, water, and then the last thing was a bottle of formula.  She's 6 months old and they still use a bottle warmer at daycare for her bottles even though we only run it under hot water at home.  When did you ladies stop warming bottles?  I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it.  The sweet potatoes she had were just pureed the night before, so I don't know if maybe there was something wrong with those.  Any suggestions or things to look for?  Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately this sounds EXACTLY like what happened to Madelyn a couple of weeks ago and it turned out to be stomach bug that she picked up at daycare.  One of the kids got sick over the weekend and the parent didn't say anything to them because they didn't think much of it.  It ended up making it's rounds and just about all the kids and teachers in the infant room got it.  DH and I also got it and it was miserable.  Luckily it was pretty short lived and after 24 hours we felt pretty good.

I really hope that you guys don't get sick.  It took about 48 hours after she threw up the first time for me to start vomiting.  Then DH 48 hours after that.  haha

I remember you talking about that.  DH was acting very tired and sickly this morning, but I just figured it was because we had a long night.  I'll have to keep an eye on him too.

  • Oh no! I'm glad she is better and hopefully continues to improve. Poor baby! I would maybe toss the sweet potatoes. Is she getting formula at daycare? If so, is it possible they gave her a bottle that had been sitting out for too long? Formula spoils quickly when not refrigerated.
I definitely plan to question this too.  I need to make sure they're throwing it out sooner than the breastmilk.  I label the bottles so it should be pretty clear which is bm and which is formula.

  • Aw, poor thing! I'm guessing it was a stomach bug because anything else (I don't think) would have bothered her that long to keep throwing up.
