We skipped a nap...now what?

Short version, my 23 mos STILL takes two gloriously long naps plus sleeps 11 hrs at night. I've recently wondered what life would be like if he didn't take that nap. (Since I also have an 8mos old, I've relished it thus far.) Today I took him to a music class during his usual a.m. nap. He was clingy and yawned throughout. Once we arrived back home I wasn't sure what to do with him. Keep him up and go down for an earlier afternoon nap or put him down before lunch? I opted to put him down and he instantly conked out. Now, again I'm wondering what to do. Let him sleep as long as he needs, with the likelihood that he'll not take an afternoon nap, or wake him up and resume our usual afternoon schedule? Obviously the earth won't explode either way...just looking for others' thoughts. My kiddos thrive on their current schedule and my DS seems to enjoy knowing what to expect.

  • Guess that wasn't quite short. Hate that mobile bump deletes paragraph returns!

  • I'd probably let him sleep and then just deal if he doesn't take an afternoon nap. He may be crabbier than normal since he's out of his normal routine. Maybe you could try laying him down later for his afternoon nap?
  • I would just let him sleep as long as he wants and maybe move bedtime up slightly if he's really grouchy later.

  • I think this depends on what your ultimate goal is.  If you're going to change his routine for the long term to not have the AM nap, then I wouldn't let him sleep too much for the first nap you did end up putting him down for and proceed with whatever routine for the afternoon you are aiming for.  If it was a more one and done kind of thing, then I would let him sleep as he needs it and possibly deal with him being overtired tonight.
  • Let him sleep!
  • All good stuff! I let him sleep and he was up at the same interval as usual. We were exactly an hour "behind schedule" the rest of the day. He is so adaptable I should have known it wouldn't phase him. He took an afternoon nap as usual and woke up happy as can be! Thanks!
