Craft Fair

If you have ever been to or sold at a craft fair, I need your advice.

For those that have sold there (@KarmB ) How did it go? Did you make any $$? Would you do it again?

For those that have been to one: Did you see a Scentsy booth? If you had, would you have stopped and browsed? Bought anything?

I am considering selling at a local craft fair, but I have to buy inventory in order to do so, which is risky. I am being overly cautious and asking everyone what they think. Haha

Thanks!

I don't know about scentsy... most times when I've been at a craft fair people really go for the handmade things, and unique items they can't get elsewhere.  The one I did do with my mom was a craft fair at her work (it was a large office building) and we sold handmade ornaments and stenciled boxes and storage crates.  I was younger (like 10 or 12) so I don't know how much we made, but I know it was fun and it gave us some spending money!

If you were asking about selling those cute pants and rompers you've made K, then I'd say give it a try....

I've actually thought of that too. I wonder if I could sell both out of one tent? Haha. I really want to kick off my Scentsy business, but I hear you about the handmade stuff too and I kind of agree. I just don't think I'd have the time to make enough inventory for it to be worth it for the pants and dresses.... hmmmm...

I've thought several times about re-opening my old Etsy store (I used to embellish onesies and sell women's skirts) but I hardly made any $$ (I sold like 5 things) and shut it down after like 3 months when I got pregnant. Hmmm... You are making me think, Trixie! Haha

  • I've seen Scentsy at craft stuff like you're talking about. Maybe it's just our area but we have a pretty equal mix of homemade and direct sell booths at things.
For Scentsy, I like the opportunity to smell. Personally I'd rather smell all the minipots and then be able to order/pay that day and have my stuff shipped to me, rather than the randomly maybe see something I like from inventory.  Does that make sense?

That is very true and makes complete scents (see what I did there?). I have thought of that and was thinking maybe I could get away with less inventory, but being that the fair is on Dec 21, ordering would mean people wouldn't get their stuff until after Christmas, which is not good for last minute Christmas shoppers. I would obvi have the option to order available, but then there would be shipping costs and what not that people like to avoid.

However, you are on to something @bellaxanthe about having my hand made stuff for sale and just a small inventory of Scentsy with mostly catalogues and order forms and what not along with my samples.....

Thanks guys! Y'all are all giving me a lot to think about!

  • I participated at one at work, it's not a huge building, maybe 300 employees. I sold crochet hats that my mom made.  I think I sold like 35?  My mom didn't make a ton for display though, mostly for samples and then I took orders for more.  Since it was at work, delivery was in person so it worked out well.

There was a lady who set up a scentsy booth and it was pretty popular.   I'd always wanted to try one but could not stomach paying that much for a candle.  I actually ended up getting a warmer as a gift recently, so now I'm excited to buy and smell new scents.  I think you should do it! Especially since it's right before christmas and people will want some for gifts.  And I agree with PP that people will want to smell the scents.  If anything it would be good for you to pass out your business cards for future orders.
  • I broke even. I found out about it a month prior so my set up wasn't the best. But I loved it.
