Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

talking

My son is almost 19 months he has a few words that are clear mama dada doggie yes  uh oh and some words are a little unclear all down thank you truck but he tries.

The doctor says he should be able to say 2 words at a time such as dada up and he can't

Should I be worried that he is not talking as much as he should or when he is ready he will start talking.

Re: talking

  • My pediatrician said she would look for 2 word sentences at our 2 year appointment. DS is 22.5 months and just started using 2 word sentences. He has "All done" "It hurt" "oh boy/man" 'where is go" simple things. Don't worry about it yet. Your LO seems to be on track.

  • yeah he points to what he wants or will push me to where what he wants is he is great with following directions im not worried about any of that.

He does try to say new words and started doing animal noises so I think I will wait and see what happens.

  • Combining words (even just 2 words) is a 2-year milestone.  Also, unclear words (or approximations, such as "ba" for "ball") absolutely count as words at this age.  Hope this helps!
  • I agree that at this age there is such a wide range. My girls were barely saying anything around 18-20 months and then last month (at 22m) their speech exploded. They say 20-30 words and string them together. They also copy words that I say now all the time.

  • Thank you for posting this! I was beginning to worry about my DS also. His sister is very verbal and is the less shy of the 2. But her words just exploded in the last few days, but he still points and when he thinks you are not listening he will say things like choo choo. So maybe just wait it out and see what happens. :) It sounds like things are normal...

  • I know I am a little late to this conversation but I just wanted to say that I am a speech therapist and I work in early intervention.  A good rule of thumb for little ones learning to talk and the length of their utterances is that it should be the same as their age.  So, usually around 2 they are starting to combine 2 words, around 3 they start combining 3 words and so on. Your child seems right on track! Don't worry too much about it yet.  And like a lot of the PP said, some kids start a little early and some start a little late.
