advice for getting LO to take medicine?

LO will be 2 weeks tomorrow and has been put on antibiotics for an indefinite period of time as a preventative measure for some kidney problems, but I can't get him to take it as he always spits it back out.  Anyone have any advice for successfully administering medicine at this age? I've tried both when he's hungry and full, and neither work.  He solely receives breastmilk, mostly from the boob, but does get 2-3 bottles of pumped milk per day (still struggling with the bottle).  Is it okay to mix the medicine (amoxicillin) into a pumped bottle? I've left a message with the Dr.'s office, but haven't heard back yet for the day.  Thanks!

  • LO takes liquid Zantac twice a day for reflux. I have him suck on my upside down pinky, then put the syringe in the corner of his mouth and give him the dose slowly as he's sucking. Just like finger feeding. Works great!

  • I would not put it in his milk unless you can be sure he's taking all of it. My experience as a peds RN, try tilting the syringe towards the side of the mouth and far back slowly or they will just push the med out with the tongue
  • I blow gently in LOs face and it causes him to swallow as a reflex. Works great.

THIS. I have to give my LO mylicon drops because she gets really bad gas. I also quickly put her on the boob and it seems to encourage her to swallow it all :)

  • Drip it very slowly into the cheek. I would not put it in the bottle because if he doesn't like it, you will waste the milk. And antibiotics tend to be thick, I would think it may be hard for LO to suck out. Maybe you could try those pacifier medicine dispensers?
  • Go verrrry slowly so that it's almost impossible to spit out.  Like, a drip at a time.  If you put it in milk, only put it in a tiny amount of milk.  If you put it in a whole bottle and you have trouble getting him to take it, that's a lot of liquid you then have to force into him or give up and toss the entire thing.

I do a similar thing, only I do it when he's taking a bottle. When the bottle's in his mouth, I put the syringe in the corner of his mouth and slowly give him the dose as he's sucking.

  • When giving DD an oral vaccine, the nurse at our pedi's office squeezed her cheeks together to make her have duck lips and then put the dropper in. She said they can't spit it out like that.

  • I put a little in his mouth and quickly sneak the bink in so he sucks/swallows. Works like a charm!
