*~*~MSPI Moms Weekly Check In*~*~

Hi all,
I am traveling today and posting this from my phone so it won't be in the usual format. So let's talk about traveling; what have your traveling experiences been while on an MSPI diet? Any tips or advice for the newbies? Questions related to traveling?
And of course, how's everyone doing? :)

Re: *~*~MSPI Moms Weekly Check In*~*~

  • I've traveled a few times since having my MSPI baby (she's 5 months now). I make sure to keep Lara Bars and Justins Peanut Butter packets with me at all times. I try and pack something special to snack on as well. We have a local popcorn store that makes a variety of popcorns. I asked the owner and the kettle corn and candied popcorns are dairy and soy free, yum!! I also try to look ahead of time to find a chick fil a close since they're nuggets and fries are safe.

I just came back from a weekend church function and substituted a few of my safe items for theirs. I brought my own homemade rolls for hamburgers, chicken for fajitas, and pancakes for breakfast. I didn't feel left out or bummed about the diet since I was able to have practically the same dishes everyone else was enjoying.

  • I have not traveled and don't know how I could. I have removed so much from my diet that I don't even attempt to eat anything unless I made it. Even when we do day trips to the "city" and are gone over lunch, I pack food for me and just bring it in to the restaurant when DH and DS1 are eating.
  • I bring as much food with me as I can. Eating out is stressful, but I can usually find something safe. I ask lots of specific questions, e.g., is this sautéed in butter?, what is it seasoned with?, what kind of oil do you use?, etc. rather than just asking if it has dairy or soy in it. When I tell the waiter about my restrictions they are usually very helpful and willing to check on ingredients and suggest alterations.
We are ok. DS broke his leg yesterday. :( So I am at home trying to keep him occupied without letting him run around. It's going to be a long day.

OMG.  I'm sorry to hear about your son.  Hope he heals quickly!  ((Hugs)) Mama!

  • I think I am getting a stomach virus and DS is teething and has a cold, so we are kind of crummy right now. I have only done car trips. For the car and when we are going out, I pack safe snacks and lunch in a cooler. Most restaurants accomodate us but we don't have much to choose from- it usually ends up being grilled chicken which I am very sick of. So the last trip we did we stayed at a "Hyatt House." It had a full service kitchen so we went food shopping for things we could make for breakfast and dinner in the room and things we could bring with us for lunch. They also had a breakfast with tons of variety and the staff showed me labels so we knew what was safe. I really loved the hotel so I will try to stay at that chain in the future. Also on an unrelated note they had a choice between pack and plays and actual mini cribs unlike other hotels that only have pack and plays. DS will not sleep in a pack and play, but did sleep in the mini crib. So that was an added bonus!

  • How did you know your baby has a milk soy protein intolerance? Was this diagnosed by the pediatrician or did you figure it out by cutting those foods out of your diet? I'm curious because I exclusively Breastfeed and my baby is very gassy and spits up a lot. I also eat a lot of dairy and soy. I am a vegetarian so I get most of my protein from soy. I also love cheese, but now am thinking I need to change my diet.

I suspected MSPI when his poop suddenly turned green and mucousy. He was also congested, gassy, and had occasional blood in his stool. I took him to his pedi who suggested MSPI but also tested for some viruses to rule those out. I cut out dairy and his symptoms improved but not totally, so then I also cut soy. I was also correcting my oversupply at the same time because that can cause similar symptoms, but even with that fixed he still had symptoms.
There's no test for MSPI, the only real way to know is to eliminate those foods from your diet and see if your LO improves. It can take several weeks to get the proteins cleared out of both your symptoms.
Since your diet is already somewhat restricted, you might think about seeing a nutritionist. Beans, lentils, nuts, and some grains can be good sources of protein too. Even some veggies have a fair amount of protein. GL!
  • Thanks, I also have some oversupply and fast letdown issues so thought that's what was causing the gassiness. My LO has had green stools a few times, but not a lot. I eat beans and veggies too, but of course my husband and MIL believe that's the culprit, however, I was leaning more towards the dairy so maybe I'll try cutting back on that. Thank you.
  • Hello! This is my first time posting on this thread. My DS is 5 months old and ive been dairy and soy free since June. I try to bring my own snacks and lunch when out and about during the day. Haven't traveled overnight yet. Does anyone else still notice specks of blood in their LO's diaper? Since I've cut dairy and soy I've noticed a huge change in my LO almost immediately. Happier, less straining when trying to go to the bathroom. I still notice a tiny speck of blood in his diapers every now and then though and I'm not sure why. I'm thinking maybe I've eaten hidden dairy? Or could it be from a cracked nipple from nursing? Anyone have a similar experience?
  • @AnnP84 it could be from hidden dairy or soy, or something else in your diet. My DS had occasional blood and smelly poop even once I was sure I'd cut all dairy and soy, even hidden. This led me to try cutting out other potential culprits: for me it was eggs and peanuts, then wheat. Finally we saw no more blood and poop was relatively normal. If I were you I'd review everything you've eaten and look for hidden ingredients. A food diary was really helpful for me - I used MyFitnessPal on my phone. GL!

OS and fast letdown can definitely cause those same symptoms so you might try correcting the OS first. If you do cut dairy and soy Happy Herbivore has some soy-free vegan recipes. GL!
