H's job situation update

First off, sorry I've been MIA for a while. What with figuring out unemployment, temporary state insurance for the kid, trying to make ends meet, and planning for Boston (the tickets were nonrefundable, before you go judging my irresponsible spending. lol) I've had a hard time getting on unless I'm on my phone, and I'm usually too lazy to post from it. I have been lurking and keeping up as much as possible though!

I just wanted to update everyone on the job situation. Good news! Rocky landed a job at Schwan and will be running the truck route. He originally applied for the operations management position, but the hiring manager wants to use him for sales (ya know, since he has such a bangin' personality. ;) ) The manager is promising good commission pay, and although it's long hours I think he will enjoy being face to face with people again. The base pay and benefits are good, so I'm crossing my fingers that he will love it. If not, we can find something else but at least in the meantime we have a paycheck coming in! The other good news is his unemployment was approved so we will be getting back pay for the weeks he was unemployed. This will help a lot, especially since he just found out that he needs some serious service on his car that will probably be close to $400 (it's always fucking something, isn't it?) and the rest will be going back into savings to semi-replace the money we took out to pay bills and live on for the past month. We found out he got the job on Thursday before I left town, so thankfully I was able to let loose a little in Boston and not be quite as frugal as I originally planned. Thank you guys so much for your well wishes, it seems that your T&Ps worked!

In other news, this whole being broke thing has made me re-evaluate some things, and I'm about 95% sure that I've decided to go back to school. I scheduled a meeting last month with admissions at a local state university, and it will only take me around 2-3 years to get my masters in speech language pathology. (I already have an unrelated bachelors degree) It's always been something that interests me, and for the past few years I've felt this "calling" I guess, to go back to school. I've even had recurring dreams about it, and H losing his job this year was the kick in the pants that motivated me to take the next step and really get more information about it. It's not something I can do right off the bat; I won't be able to drop some of my work hours to make it possible until H gets steady paychecks rolliing in. So I'm looking at fall next year at the earliest. But I'm excited to have a plan. I'm tired of us having to live from paycheck to paycheck, and if I can get this degree I will be making more than enough for us to save for a house and definitely enough for potential baby #2.

  • Good luck! And I'm pretty sure SLPs still have 100% job placement. I get calls, emails, and mail from recruiters all the time.

  • That is great news!  I hope that your H enjoys the new job.  I am glad you figured out what you want to do and are starting school again.  I hope things keep getting better and better for you all!
  • Great news! And I applaud you for going back to school. For the past 3 years, I have wanted to go back and go into nursing but I kept putting it off. Now I have waited too long and if I go back, I will have to retake a lot of basics (anatomy). Good Luck with everything!

  • Thanks everyone! When I got home last night H was busy studying the Schwan menu and then came in to the bedroom where I was watching HIMYM to give me a word-for-word rundown of the three items he memorized with a proud grin on his face. lol. So I'd say he likes it so far. I am super scared of going back to school, not because I don't think I can do the work, but for the time and effort it will take to actually do the work. I won't be able to put T to bed and then zone out on the TV eating cookies like I usually do and I'm not looking forward to that. Haha.
  • So happy for your DH that he got a job he'll like! As a speech pathologist I can assure you that you are picking a great profession that is in high demand. Do you know what setting you'd ideally work in? If you ever have questions or need help with school stuff feel free to pm me or post on here!

  • @grimesk12 I wouldn't mind working in either a hospital, private practice or school setting, I'm not really too particular, provided that the pay is about the same. I would love to work with kids, though.
  • The pay in a hospital is typically more than a school setting. However hospital jobs are hard to find and there's less job security. Private practices pay more than schools but with the way private insurance is right now the job security isn't as good as a school. The schools typically pay the least however most of them offer great health benefits, great retirement, and the summer off and school breaks so really only about 190 days of work. Also most hospital based SLPs work with inpatients mainly adults. There are some that do outpatients and see kids. Private practices and home health mostly do all ages. Schools obviously k-12th grade. I love middle school!
