I know its early, but anyone think their pets know?

I am just curious if my 2.5 year old Golden Retriever is the only one that has begun to start acting a little strange. I even turned to my DH last night to ask him if he's noticed it. Now my dog has always been close to us (sits near us, acts like a lap dog, etc.) but as of late it seems to be amped up! He is constantly leaning against me, putting his head in my lap or on my chest, or even trying to share pillows with me on our couch. He has also begun to be more alert to strange sounds from outside (which never happened before). DH thinks that the dog has some kind of sense and might just have a sense that something is up. I am seven weeks along and just thought it would be too early for him to "sense" anything. Anyone else's pets acting a bit funny since this whole pregnancy thing?

  • My pets didn't act any different with the first until he was born and they have acted no different this time.

  • Since dogs can sense things like cancer and oncoming seizures, i wouldn't be surprised if your dog is sensing something different going on!

my dog is an 85lb pit bull who also thinks he's a lap dog. i haven't noticed any extra cuddling from him (it would be almost impossible for him to cuddle more than he already does), but i'm curious to see how he acts when i have a big belly and he can't spoon me on the couch and rest his head there anymore haha.

  • For sure! My dog is the same way... Has always been a cuddler but has multipled ten times over! He is always leaning, kissing, sharing my pillow, etc. My husband thinks it's hysterical :-)

We release a great deal of pheromones which we do not consciously detect. A friend of mine kept complimenting me on my hair, weight loss, as if she could note something was different about me. That was the day before our BFP, I am certain she just knew. So we react subconsciously to pheromones all the time.

Animals such as dogs and cats live by scent and pheromones. If you google it, you will find many articles supporting instances of animals knowing about disease, and even pregnancy.
So my opinion is that yes, they know. Sometimes they don't care though. *points to her aloof cats*

  • One if my first signs on why I took the pregnancy test was my dogs behavior. They're smart furballs!
  • Yes!!! My cat has been extra snuggly and when we went to my in-laws house the dogs were ALL over me--even my MIL commented on it!
  • Yes! Our 10 month old boxer pup stopped jumping up on me weeks before we found out we were expecting that and then he sniffs at my belly..he has become very clingy to me and listens better too so yes they know!
  • Yes. My dog has always been a big cuddle bug. But now it's 10x more, like he needs to be on me at all times. Normally I'd think that's great, but my pregnancy nose has heightened when it comes to his smell. It's quite sad cause I have to push him off me or I feel like I will throw up :(

Attached is a pic of him insisting on being on me when I was laying down. At this point my nose hadn't kicked in yet.

  • Yep--my boxer/lab mix knew before I even got a BFP both times (and was one of the reasons that prompted me to POAS this time). He'll get up on the bed in the middle of the night and lay with his head on my belly, which he would never normally do.

    How sweet!

One of my cats (my favorite) has been extra needy lately, but he has some major halitosis! Whenever he yawns or starts to clean himself while laying on me, I have to push him off or risk vomiting everywhere. Poor guy, lol.

  • I definitely think my dog knows. She used to sleep all over the bed but now she lays by my stomach all night. And our kitten is all over me. He could care less about my husband, but he always wants to be with me :)

  • My dog gets extra lovey with me. With my first pregnancy I swear she knew before I did and when I started to miscarry (before I knew I was miscarrying) she wouldn't leave my side. With this one she's just been curling up with me a lot, but we do have a puppy who demands a LOT of attention so she hasn't had many opportunities. The puppy is oblivious, but he is oblivious to most things, lol.

  • My sweet boxer (the one on the left in the pic) who is usually Sir Jumps-a-lot has been much calmer around me lately and also has started barking at EVERYTHING that comes near the yard.
  • I definitely think so. I have a pit bull who is such a sweetie but she has been extra vigilant in the cuddles, and I noticed this change before I found out. She is always by my side, in fact she is cuddled up next to me as I type this! She is going to be the perfect nanny dog, she is soo good with kids and other animals, namely my parrot Toby. She can wrestle and tumble with the best but if there's a small child she is so gentle, no antics, and gives the softest kisses. I love her so much!
  • I definitely think my dogs know. They've been extra nice to me. We've also started taking them to doggie school and been starting some new rules around the house to prep for having a baby- so they know something's up.
  • One of the ways I knew before I even poas is that I went to my SIL's house and her dog, who is normally really friendly anyway, would not leave me alone, and when I sat on the couch he came and curled up next to me with his head in my lap and kept bumping his head into my stomach, and he had never done that with me before. Also my cat whenever he can will lay next to me curled up next to my stomach. Before he would sleep on me whether it was my side, my stomach, wherever, but now it is next to me and next to my stomach only.
  • My dog does not leave my side during pregnancy.  She's not that way at all when I'm not pregnant.  She started snuggling with me on the couch and curling up next to me before I even took my HPT and knew myself.

  • Oh mine for sure! We've been changing things up on him tho. Like he can't sleep in the bed anymore etc. So he's been peeing and pooping on the floor to get back at us. And somedays he just acts weird when I sleep all day. I def believe they can sense these things!
  • My cat is being more lovey. He's not a lap cat and tends to keep his distance, but the other day while napping he curled up in my legs and napped with me.

I must be emotional! This made me tear up haha. So cute!!!!
  • My dog definitely knows somethings up. For several weeks now, she has been nosing my tummy and resting her head by it. My 2 cats on the other hand, could be completely oblivious... but its more likely that they are so self-centered that they dont care.

  • Actually yes.  My dogs were both more attached to my husband but one day they became my best friends and wouldn't leave me alone.  They were either under me, beside me and constantly followed me around.  I thought that was so odd that I took a test and boom!  I was pregnant!  Now my older dog sleeps beneath the bed and is always leaning into me.  He also seems more alert.  My cat is also constantly howling and wanting to nuzzle now. :D

  • I say definitely yes! My boxer has always been obsessed with me but before we even got the BFP I had said he'd been acting even more clingy than usual...and even now will just NOT leave my side, ever. When I was walking him the other night there was another person coming at us from the opposite direction and he asserted himself and snarled a little...which is NOT like him...in the slightest. He is normally the biggest, fun loving, goofball ever - so I think he definitely knows and is watching out for me even more now! (and little lambchop too lol)
  • My boy dog (in the pic below) has not acted any differently. Our beagle has been my husband's dog for the last 10 years. Over the last couple of weeks, she is totally my girl. She wants to sit on my lap and snuggle with me constantly.

  • My husband mentioned that he thinks our dog knows. He is not a growler or barker and has been reacting to noises all the time now. He also always rests his head on my belly when he cuddles now. It's pretty damn adorable.
  • My beagles know something is up... they both sniff my belly when I get home from work and have been extra cuddly especially laying near my belly.

  • We have a rescued cat that was badly re-homed after 1st owner got pregnant. With my first pregnancy she would NOT let me touch her until baby was about 3 months old. With this pregnancy she is suddenly super sweet and cuddly. I love it!
  • My dogs started following me around before I could even test for a positive pregnancy. They were super clingy & attentive. This happened last time I was pregnant too so we joke about even needing to purchase a test.
  • We adopted a 6 year old English Setter last spring after her previous family had a baby. Although she had decided she is my dog (not my son's dog) when she first came home with us, now she won't let anyone else take care of her. The boys will try to let her out or play fetch with her but she only wants me to do it.
  • I think my dogs absolutely know.  There have been several fights between the 2 about who gets to lay across my belly and the younger one has to be touching me at all times.

My dog totally knows. He's a vizsla and if anyone knows anything about vizslas you know they are just super loving dogs to begin with but since about week 5 he pretty much hasn't left my side. Always cuddles and rests his head on my belly. I'm waiting for the day he feels the baby kick. I'm hoping for a reaction.
This is what I am hoping for too!

  • I have 3 dogs two are outside and ones an inside outside. Today when DH went to feed them the inside one wouldn't even eat her food until he let her inside she ran straight to me sniffed my belly then would eat she's DH dog but now if I am home she won't go near him. I can't even pee with her under my feet right now. I think she knows and is already feeling protective.
  • We have a 12yo Irish staffy who usually hates it if you put your head near his but the past two weeks or so he's been getting into bed with us putting his head on my pillow and not moving all night, he even follows me to the toilet so I'm sure he knows there's something going on x
  • My dog and two cats are all pretty affectionate. One of my cats has definitely gotten more cuddly since about week 5. Not sure if it's that she knows I'm preggers or that the weather has gotten colder. She likes to need when she snuggles up. I've tried stopping her from doing it on my stomach but every once in a while she sneaks a couple in before I can stop her. Can't wait for her reaction when the babies start pushing back. :)

  • Our puppy is all over my belly these days!
  • Yes!!  My dog os 2 years old and he was a cuddler but now is 10 times worse.  My dog is 56 - 60 lbs lab mix with chow.  Always with me, cuddling, taking up my side of the bed, following me and everything else.  It is funny I woke up the other night and he had his head on my pillow and I was cuddling him.  I was like REALLY is this happening right not.  He loved every minute of it.  Very protective of me when we have people over too.
  • My MILs female chocolate lab follows me around and sits right next to me when I'm pregnant so I'm sure she knows. She sniffs my stomach and won't leave me alone, but she's not normally as protective of me. Her male lab doesn't seem to have noticed though!
