Playing while on potty

We are in the beginning stages of potty training -- she is mainly just going in the morning, after a nap, at night and maybe one other time during the day.
She usually uses a potty seat on top of the toilet -- we have a separate potty chair but she seems to do fine with the seat on the toilet so I thought that may be an easier transition (??) so we are just going with that.
Anyway, sometimes I will sit her on the potty before bed or another time because she doesn't always tell me when she has to go, so she might sit up there for several minutes. Lately, she's been "playing" while sitting up there -- she has learned how to turn around and get down, she reaches for toilet paper/etc. I try to correct this, but I also don't want her to associate the potty with getting in trouble so I've taken it easy.
Should I be more strict about this? Should we try the potty chair (or would she just get off that too??)? Should I just let her play??

Re: Playing while on potty

  • If you want her to sit for awhile, then yes, let her play, but bring some books for her to look through or something like that.  You don't want her playing with the TP, it'll all end up on the floor ;)  However, that said, we had to stop with the playing after awhile because it actually became more of a distraction.  Now that we've made it to the other side, we are kind of in the middle.  He always has some kind of toy with him, but it no longer prevents him from doing business.

  • Well, I usually end up taking the toilet paper, but books/etc are a good idea! Thanks :)

  • I'd let her play within reason.  I never let DS pull the toilet paper all over the place or anything like that, but in general toddlers and sitting still just don't happen very often lol.

If she likes the potty seat on the regular toilet I'd keep going with that, but that's just me because I hated dumping and cleaning the little potties!

  • We never really played on the toilet, even in the beginning.  If he needed to do a #2 sometimes I'd sit on the edge of the tub and we'd sing a song since he was having constipation issues back then so I had to take his mind off of "the go".
Now he does it all himself and I often hear him singing to himself while he's on the toilet.  That's his tell-tale sign he's taking a poop. Pees don't warrant singing for him.
