missing poop

We are struggling to keep LO regular.  She was super predictable but the past few weeks she is going inconsistently and when she goes it is small and firm.  If it goes on for enough days she is in so much pain when she goes that she cries.  She pushes throughout the day and produces nothing.  We have cut out cheese, bananas, rice, apple sauce, and are limiting yogurt dramatically.  We are also increasing fiber rich foods like bran, peas, prunes.  We recently bought black beans but haven't tried them yet.  I am at a loss.  The pedi we saw last week (not our normal pedi) told me her stomach felt fine and that we should just play around with her diet, increase fiber and see what works.  He also recommended suppositories, which work on the days we give them but don't seem to provide a long-term solution.  LO is still nursing 6 times in 24 hours and eats 3 solid meals per day.  Anyone else dealt with is?  Anything work well for you?  TIA!

Re: missing poop

  • DD1 was on miralax for almost a year and that worked wonders.  You could also try adding more water to your LO's diet, encouraging fiber and fruit and limiting dairy.  Certain fruits work wonders, like pears, apricots and prunes.

  • Another thing to try is Flaxseed meal. It's a natural laxative, just mix it with a yogurt or puree. It's also extremely healthy anyways so it's a win win.
  • Fluid is so important. Don't increase fiber if you don't up fluid too

  • LO used to have similar issues, under the pedi's direction we started giving him some juice. He had 2oz of prune juice every day from 7-9 months. If we missed even 1 day he would get backed up again. He eventually outgrew the problem and now doesn't have any issues.

  •  Thanks ladies!  Those who have been through it give me hope!  We have tried apple and prune juice but she hasn't liked either one.  All this talk of fluids has me thinking that this problem may have started when she dropped one of her daycare bottles.  She was eating every three hours and went to every 4.  We added an ounce to the two bottles she gets at daycare but there was still  a 3 oz reduction in fluids from that transition.  We will really push the water and see if we can find a juice that she likes as well as keeping up with the fiber-rich foods.  Really, THANK YOU all so much for giving your suggestions.  Its awful to watch her struggle with this, especially on the days it is causing her pain.

My sister found prune drops, CVS sells them.  DS tolerated them a lot better since he hated prunes. When we are having pooping problems, we add 2 drops to a 4 ounce bottle of water and it helps relieve his discomfort.

And lots and lots of water
