Babies: 6 - 9 Months

what do you use for cough?

DD has a cold. She's congested and now started coughing which isn't letting her sleep. We have a humidifier running all day/night in her room right now. I did the saline nasal spray and sucked snot out with the nose frida stuff. We gave her a bath in a steamy shower before bedtime. Her mattress is slanted a little too so she's not laying flat.
She's 7 months old.
Is there anything I could do for her cough?

Re: what do you use for cough?

  • Nope. Your doing everything you can be. Matbe some baby vapo rub on the bottom of her feet and chest may help!

  • Tylenol?
Tylenol is not going to help a cough. I wouldn't give it unless baby has a high-grade fever (is that a thing? Not a low-grade fever is what I mean) or seems to be in pain and very upset.

  • My LO has a terrible cold right now too, so I'm also interested in any guidance.  She kept waking up crying last night because she couldn't breathe through her nose, and was coughing.  So heartbreaking.  I guess there's no baby cold medicine?

Vic's on the bottom of the feet, suck the junk from his nose and use a humidifier. Unfortunately there's nothing else you can really do. Usually the cough is from snot going down their throats.

I hope this doesn't sound ignorant but do I put the Vic's on her feet even though they are in her sleeper plus sleep sac? thanks!

I do bottom of the feet and chest for bad colds, but typically I put it on the bottom of the feet and cover with socks. It works, trust me.

  • thank you! I'll try that tonight.
  • The Vick's thing is crazy! I heard about it and ignored it forever but last year was so desperate for my 5 year old to get some sleep that I went for it and it stopped the coughing! We googled it and basically discovered that there is no proven rationale as to why it works, but it does.

One thing to keep in mind, if a child has a lot of chest congestion, they NEED to be coughing to get it out (sad as that sounds). So use wisely.

  • Regular Vicks, or do they make one for babies/kids?
  • I use the Hylands baby tiny cold tablets for congestion and nose issues and the Hylands baby cough syrup. They are doing wonders for my son.
  • We used the Baby Vicks cooling rub on her chest and feet last night, and I think it helped a bit.  She still woke up every hour, but she seemed less miserable.  The coughing does sound productive, but it's so heartbreaking to hear.

Question: She's refusing the bottle, and normally big girl is an enthusiastic eater.  Is this common during a cold?  She's still taking to her solids, but I'm wondering if the bottle is painful because of ear pressure, or uncomfortable because of breathing through a stuffy nose?

  • sorry to hijack your post honeydew01 , hopefully this is helpful for you too!
  • No worries at all. DD always refuses the bottle but she is nursing less than normal since she has had a cold. Her nose is congested so it makes eating hard. I'm holding her up while nursing (kills my back) so maybe try to hold her upwards when you're giving her the bottle. I hope it helps.

I tried the Vics last night too and the result was same as yours. She woke up the same amount but unlike the night before she seems less miserable. She was able to go back to sleep easier too whereas the night before she was up for hours..
