Pneumonia

I know nothing about pneumonia but my cousins family all have it. A child was hospitalized due to it. We are having a big family dinner on the 13th & I am worried about my son catching it. These aren't responsible ppl that would stay home out of respect if they are still sick by then. I'm scared DS will catch it.

Then we've also got another family dinner on H's side & his neice (as of last week), has hand, foot & mouth disease.

What should I do??

    Has your LO had the pneumococcal vaccination?

    my nephew has hand in mouth disease at the minute and I'm not going anywhere near. He has been in agony and couldn't eat at all. Probably a bit extreme but I've banned all family from our house until the incubation period is over.

    My mom had pneumonia when LO was 5 weeks. From what I understand, you get pneumonia from something else, and that something is what could be contagious. At least that's the kind my mom had. I called our pedi and asked how careful I needed to be. I ended up having everyone over as planned for a family dinner but wore LO in a wrap the whole time. Call your pedi and find out what he/she recommends. Then if you are too worried to go, just blame it in what the pedi says! :)

    The pneumococcal bacteria is the main culprit and that's contagious (which is why they give the pneumococcal vaccination to immunise them against it). As @adl3399 said I'd check with your pedi to be sure.

    If they've been diagnosed, they're likely on antibiotics.  I would just ask that the not hold the baby or get right in his face.  FWIW, *I* just got over pneumonia and neither of my kids got it and I'm definitely in their faces all the time :)

    How long is the incubation for HF&M @Lolalipsy? I ask because 1 child had it at LO's daycare and so I'm of course a bit freaked out. I have to send her to daycare, so there isn't a lot I can do. I did keep her home 1 day, because it was also the day after her immunizations and I wasn't sure how she'd feel anyway. The effected child's parents were keeping her home until this coming Monday (she was diagnosed on Wednesday).

    OP- If it were me, I'd probably avoid the family gathering. But I second Lola's suggestion- check if your LO has had the vaccine. I think it's part of the 2,4,6 month series, so they wouldn't be fully protected, but it's my understanding (according to pedi) that they have about 80% immunity to those particular diseases after the 2 and 4 month shots.

    One of the family members has said she's not coming. 2 of the little boys just have coughs now.

    The incubation period is one week. Daycare will take him back after a week once the sores have healed.

    With it being over a week away, I would doubt they would still be contagious.

    Side note: The term "incubation period" is being used incorrectly here. The incubation period is how long it takes from when you are exposed until when you get sick and has nothing to do with how long you are contagious.
