XP: Muscular Tongue Tie

I plan to call my DD1's pediatric dentist when they open today but trying to get as much information as possible as we will need to make a quick decision. I have been posting quite a bit in the past week as I got mastitis and lost a good deal of my supply. My LC blames the masistis and drop on DD2's tongue tie. I brushed it off but am starting to believe it. We have had several dry diapers when they should have been wet, she keeps falling asleep while feeding, etc. This a.m., she had 2 feedings ove 4 hours and neve peed. But immediately after both feedings, I pumped a couple ounces on each side. She should have been able to get that milk. She has a nice latch, I think she just isn't moving that tongue enough. I initally blew it off because we had a very good ENT take a look - she would not clip it in the office because it wasn't tissue that was making up the tie- it was muscle. She said she could do it but it would require putting her to sleep and overnight stay. I guess the lazor technique can be done quickly in the office. The ENT also noted that it was a very minor tie. I have major long term concerns over cutting muscle! Has anyone had a similar diagnosis? Thoughts, outcomes? I feel like I have 2 awful choices: 1. cut the muscle 2. turn to formula as she needs to be nourished. I'm not sure I can EP again with this one, as much as the idea breaks my heart. I did with DD1 (milk had taken 10 days to come in and she never took after that. I had ppd with ep'ing and now with DD1 to tend to as well, I am not sure EP'ing is the best idea for us. I am feeling devastated right now....I am a cloth diapering, baby wearing, baby food making mama (my husband tells me I am getting a little "crunchy" since having children, lol!), so the idea of not giving her breastmilk kills me.

  • You need to follow your gut!  That mommy gut that is telling you what to do.  My DS was tongue-tied and it can cause a mass of problems, lots of the ones you described.  Have you tried using a nipple shield??  They can make a big difference!  It can help LO latch properly.

We decided to get it clipped. I was miserable and so was DS.  I didn't want to quit nursing either, so I went with it.  Best decision of my life!!  I've never heard anything about muscle vs. tissue though?  Our ENT did it right in the office and DS latched on right away.

Everything got better from then on out.  If you really want to nurse and you already know that this what is best for your LO, then I would personally go on and get it taken care of.

    Good luck!
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...
Mom to Carter (6), and Calianne (1).
Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!

  • Just saw the oral surgeon who said he absolutely wouldn't cut- it is mostly the muscle there. We didn't a weighted feeding tho with the LC this a.m. And in 30 minutes, she only got 2.1 oz!! I am so torn!
