5 month old sleep help

I don't want to start a debate on sleep training methods, I just need help and ideas. I have a five month old who went thru the 4 month wakeful at four months and then about a week ago got her first tooth. So its been about a month and a half of sleep problems at night an very short naps during the day. When she wakes up at night I nurse her and she will eat and fall back to sleep rather quickly. My Dr. Said I should stop feeding her at night cause she is old enough and a big baby so she doesn't need the food. However, she won't go back to sleep without it. I work full time and need sleep. Any suggestions? Please help!

Re: 5 month old sleep help

  • Are you breastfeeding, or is LO FF? It's quite common for BF babies to eat in the middle of the night for at least the first year (and I believe it helps keep mom's supply up, too).

How many times per night is she waking up/how long are her sleep stretches?

Have you looked into the No Cry Sleep Solution? I haven't tried it, but have heard good things from others.

  • That seems normal from what I've read. Around this time they don't eat as well during the day because they are distracted, and they tend to make up for it at night. Plus there is a lot of growth going on! I think you're okay. Check out kellymom.com, it is a really great site for everything to do with breastfeeding.

  • Ditto PP; that sounds pretty normal.

  • I've never not let a hungry baby get food. Key word: hungry. Sometimes baby wake up and just need soothing to go back to sleep. Sometimes they just need their mama as a pacifier (mine will "nurse" quite lightly to sleep and then out it goes...sometimes as little as a minute).
