Throwing food

Anyone have any success with getting your LO to stop throwing food& sippy cups off their high chair tray? My boys also seem to always flip their plates over when I use plates. Any suggestions?

Re: Throwing food

  • We don't usually stop the meal especially if she just sat down to eat.  We do take the items away.  LO loves to throw her sippy cup on the floor.  I pick it up twice and then set it on the table near me.  I will offer it again later in the meal or if she points to it.  As for the food I limit what I give her.  I have found that if she has a ton on food on her tray she will throw some of it off.  I only give her a few pieces of something at a time.  If she starts to throw things off later in the meal then I do take it as a sign that she is done.

  • I don't use plates and I only give him one piece of food at a time. He tends to throw when he's busy chewing food so I have to sit there the whole time and dole out the food. I also don't react when he throws so he's not getting that reinforcement.

  • We don't use plates either but he does throw food off the tray, especially if it's something he doesn't want to eat. I tried taking it away if he does that and ending meal time after two warnings but then he screams his head off and I feel guilty. (I know, I'm the mom I have to get over it and stick to my guns or this kid will rule me) Do your LOs scream when you take it away? And if so how do you handle that?

  • We do the same as @stephaniefine, but she doesn't really get the warning. She starts to throw food over the side and I say, "All done?" And then she'll start handing me everything from her tray because heaven forbid there be anything on there after she's done. It makes me laugh. But after just taking it from her a few times when she started throwing the food she is now handing it to me.

Even a minor event in the life of a child is an event of that child's world and thus a world event.
