Going for walks

I had a c section 10 days ago and am just wondering when you all started to go walking? I just want to go around the neighborhood and maybe take lo covered up in her stroller too. When did you start taking walks after your c section? When did you begin to take lo out of the house for walks period? Just curious. Thanks!

Re: Going for walks

  • I'm 11 days out and haven't yet. Still really sore. Hoping to feel up to it in a couple days. My husband took LO out on day 7. Just make sure they're dressed appropriately for the weather and shaded from the sun. I don't think it's too soon if you feel up to it.

  • I was out for a small walk the week after. I felt really great. And it felt really great to get out. Helped with my baby blues. At 3 weeks pp I was out for longer walks.
  • I think I may be a little different, I was up and walking a lot in the hospital after my c-section since I wasn't really that sore. I started going for regular walks maybe a week after I got home. I actually would have sooner but I was still getting used to having a newborn and finding time for everything!

If you are still sore I would think a stroller would help so you could have a little support from it I love our wrap and carrier but they did cause some back pain and incision discomfort the first few times I used them. Just go slow and don't over do it but I think you should be fine to start little walks at this point.
  • I didn't have a cs but we took lo out at 5 days.

  • I started going out for walks with the stroller around 2 weeks post csection. Just start slow and listen to your body. Stay close to home in case you feel like it's too much and you want to stop.

  • I've been going for walks and getting out since about 1 week pp. I started with shorter walks and have gone a bit further each time. It feels really good to get out of the house. I get stir crazy pretty easily and it helped with the baby blues. I also walked the halls in the hospital 2 days pp.

  • The maternity nurses hated me because I would sneak to the NICU to see my baby the day after my cs without anyone to walk me or push me in a wheelchair. Since I also had pre e, they were worried my BP would shoot up...which it did. That meant a few extra days in the hospital for me.

Moral of the story, take it easy. Listen to your body and don't overdo it or it could lay you up for longer, like it did with me.

  • Not until yesterday at 6 weeks. I was however unpacking and doing house work weeks ago. Just listen to your body and know you could start bleeding (if you've stopped) again.

  • I went on a walk with DH and LO about 10 days pp. I don't think I can do it myself yet because the stroller and car seat is to heavy with the baby

  • I took short walks by 1 week pp. just take it slow and don't go far. At the beginning I always had my mom or hubby with me. Pushing the stroller I found was a good support.

  • Agreed...I had a c section and took her for a walk 1 week pp...was a bit sore but manageable and felt good to get outside and get some fresh air.
  • This post inspired me to get out and do it solo. My hubs set up the stroller outside so I could just carry her out and put her in without having to lift anything extra. I felt great it was about 10 min walk. I would have gone longer but LO started to get fussy :(

  • I actually made two quick target trips about 5 days pp... it was slow going and I was pretty sore but I think it helped to move. Getting in and out of the car, not so much. Yesterday I took DS down the driveway and back (its very long) I was definitely sore when I got back but I think a lot of that had to do with picking him up in the carseat. DH has been doing it and that is pretty heavy!

  • About a week PP, but everyone's body is different and you should just take your body's cues and roll with them. If you feel up to it, go for it. If it's too much, turn around. Maybe go with someone the first time in case it does get to. E too much so they can help you with the stroller, etc.
  • I had a natural unmedicated birth and went out for my first walk at 3 weeks. Wore LO in my ring sling, 3 miles round trip. Felt good!
