Babies: 6 - 9 Months

What's your baby playing with?

DS will be 6 months this month & am wanting to step up his toy choices. What should I get?

Re: What's your baby playing with?

  • My daughter loves her Green Toys stacker. She also loves water bottles and spoons though!

  • His favorite is definitely Sophie the giraffe. He also really likes chewing on paper and cardboard. Basically, we buy a new toy and he would rather play with the packaging than the toy itself. I also give him plastic silverware and tupperware and he likes playing with that. He enjoys his jumparoo, but I try not to put him in there too much... he's mainly in there on weekend days, when we are with him all day and need different things to pass the time. We also try to get him out of the house.... he loves running errands (grocery shopping, Costco, Target, etc.) and seeing everything around him! He likes to "Help" by grabbing at the groceries that I'm buying. He'll be 6 months  in 9 days. I just don't see the point of buying lots of different toys when he is perfectly content to observe and play with other items... but we do have a few staples that we always have with us like his Pooh blankie (blanket with the animal head), Sophie the giraffe, and crinkle book.

  • Coffeemonster19, we have that too, and DS loves it! We keep the back two legs on and he can reach (bang!) on most buttons.

I'm with PP who said she doesn't spend too much on toys. My guy really loves to play with household items (Tupperware, remote (he has his own...no batteries), boxes...).

Now that he can sit up on his own, he does enjoy playing with stacking rings, blocks, and small toys he previously had no interest in. He still loves his jumperoo!
  • Right now we are big fans of the Fisher Price Laugh & Learn & Move Station, and plastic stacking rings.  She enjoys gnawing on Sophie the Giraffe, but also has just as much fun with Tupperware and measuring cups/spoons.  Her FP Luv you Zoo Jumparoo is a favorite, she just goes nuts bouncing and has a great time.  (tires her out too, which is good for Mom & Dad)

We buy all of her toys at consignment shops and flea markets, so much cheaper than buying new!  We clean them well with Clorox wipes and she's good to go.

  • My LO loves the Lamaze Play & Grow and Early Development toys. I bought her Freddie the Firefly, and she got a few others passed down to her. She can play for a long time with those. She loves anything that rattles and crinkles.

  • He's been playing with DS1's old zany zoo. We also got out some peg puzzles to help with his pincer grasp. :) Other than that, just whatever he can reach and mouth, lol.

I've been looking for peg puzzles just because DS loves his wooden puzzles. I never thought about pincer grasp. I haven't been able to find any. Where did you get yours?
  • I just bought gourds and mini pumpkins from the grocery store. We washed them and put think in a clear plastic bowl for LO to play with.
  • His feet!

Also he has a taggies lion that he loves

We just have an Melissa & Doug one that was DS1's. We got that particular one at a local toy store, but amazon has a bunch.
  • DD has a plastic spoon and a wooden spoon that she plays with. She likes water bottles and bowls and books. She has a raspbaby and a soothie that she likes to teeth on. She loves DH's old stuffed panda from when he was a baby and this crochet mermaid rattle from dandelion handcrafted. She loves tags (such as on the bed pillows or on her panda) she loves my Tibetan bells (on a strand, must be supervised to play with) and she has a cow and a pig stuffed with chimes that someone gave her, they strap to her car seat but she pulls them off now and waves them around to make the sound. Some else gave her a plastic ball thing that has shapes and corresponding holes to push them through. She likes playing with the shapes. She likes the lid to the jar of coconut oil that I use for her bottom.

That's about where she is now at 7 months but she is always into things that are not really toys like our keys, cell phones and glasses.

Mostly she wants us to carry her/hold her up in a standing position and explore the apartment or outdoors together. When she has unstructured playtime I usually set her up with things like what I mentioned above and hang out and watch her while I do something else that doesn't require too much of my attention so that I can watch her.

We don't really have a lot of toys though. What toys she does have she has had since birth or the first three months. She might be a little bored with them sometimes so she ends up making most of her toys these days out of our items in the apartment that interest her and that we allow her to play with.

The way I see it, other than a little unstructured playtime every day, she really doesn't need toys until she is a little older. Right now she needs to explore her environments and interact with people. As it is now, her one or two hours of unstructured playtime can be her on the floor with some items that are safe that she has shown interest in with me sitting near by but not interfereing.

    Anyways, that's what we do!

  • DS likes the Mozart Magic Cube, though it makes him cry every time because he is unable to eat it.
  • Mine likes shoes. No really. He loves them. Buys me at least half an hour to forty minutes ;)
