Allergy, think we might be onto something but really just confused!

As I mentioned in the post below about formula to WM, V is having a reaction to something, but we don't know what. He has these red dots that are popping out. Look like a mix between hives and bug bites. Pedi doesn't think it's milk as V has been eating yogurt and cheese for some time now. She's inclined to believe it's a reaction to amoxicillin he was just on for yet another ear infection. We stopped that last Monday and started him on zithomyacin but he is still getting them. The likelihood is he's not allergic to both antibiotics. Pedi said it could be whatever virus he is battling trying to work it's way out. He's not itchy or complaining. Breathing is fine.

Well, yesterday he was fine most of the day. Just remnants of old spots. He had eggs, yogurt, cheese, no new spots. At lunch we were out with my mom. While we were waiting for food to come I gave V some Puffs to hold him over. Then we ate lunch. He as grilled cheese and some Mac and cheese. Within 10 min or so into lunch the spots re-emerged. We think it might be Puffs? I bought him Vanilla flavored ones and I think that I mixed those into the snack container with banana ones. Then in thinking more about it, I noticed the spots initially when my DH bought him Vanilla Yo Baby. I thought maybe it was the dairy, but now I'm thinking maybe it was Vanilla? And over time it's just getting to be an uglier reaction?

Now today, no Puffs at all. Spots not too bad. Tonight they flared a bit more again, but then started to subside after his bath. I'm not really sure what to think. We see pedi again on Wed. My guess is we will be getting an appt with an allergist to rule out milk, dairy, or antibiotics......in the meantime, I am freaked out. Hoping severity doesn't progress.

  • I have no advice. Just wanted to say that I hope you get some answers!

  • It sounds like it could be the vanilla. I would wait until the hives go away and give him the puffs again. It they come back you'll know they are the ones causing it. You should also keep note of everything he eats and the status on the spots....just in case it's not the puffs. Then you can revisit your notes and see if there were any days when the spots were worse and go over what he ate

  • A food diary, with times and amounts and eating location (out of the house, in the house) is a really good idea.

So, a few things you probably already know. Responses like this can be delayed by 30 minutes or more. There is the possibility that what he is allergic to is a carrier (e.g. alcohol for vanilla extract, say) or excipient/stabilizer for a food or range of food products (some soy products, albumin). Have you tested him on soy, by chance? Have you tested him on egg white?

This has me thinking that if V is old enough, he should maybe go for a scratch test. I don't know what age they start allowing those. It is possible he is too young. It's possible he doesn't have enough skin surface to run an effective control and test area, for that matter. And, it occurs to  me that wrangling a baby for that sort of test might be tough.

This is all presuming that he has a allergy, for course. Sometimes people develop long lasting, very close together "hives" in response to strongly chlorinated substances. Restaurant-ware cleaned with bleach, dioxins in fish or a certain company's milk products etc.. That sort of condition has a very trademark rash, so presumably your pedi has been able to rule that out. In anycase, keeping track of brands and locations in which he is eating might be helpful to rule out this remote possibility.

Can you PM me the brands of the vanilla products? There might be something on the ingredient list that rings a bell.
