Telling my boss I can't do a task?

Hello,

I just found out I was pregnant a few days ago. I estimate I am about 5-6 weeks along. I work in the pet industry and sometimes part of my job requirement is to scoop cat litter boxes. How can I go about telling my boss I am no longer able to do that w/o revealing I am pregnant? I am waiting to announce my pregnancy until the 2nd trimester. If there is no way to tell my boss without it being obvious that I am pregnant are there any safety measures I can take to scoop the boxes?

Thanks in advance!

  • I would call your OB and see what s/he recommends. If she says gloves/mask are fine, great. If not, I'd consider quietly telling your boss the truth because at least your job would be protected.

Ditto this. I told my boss and only my boss when I found out I was pregnant because my job carries a few hazards as well. Fortunately, I didn't have to worry about most of them until I was a little further along, but this way we had time to figure out ways around them without anyone else noticing.
  • The particles are only an issue if you ingest them. So wear gloves and wash your hands well after and don't eat the poop :)

  • The only thing I have to add is if you were not previously wearing gloves & mask and then start wearing them, I would expect everyone at work to jump to conclusions & be prepared for questions or comments... certainly not saying to NOT do it since it is very important to do so, but I would think it is a pretty tough secret to keep in a situation like that unless you happen to do it where no one else can see you...

This is what I would recommend as well.
