Can we talk weight gain for a minute?

At my 20 week appointment I had put on 13 pounds. Then at 24 weeks I had gained another 12. 8-O At that appointment my BP was a little high and with the weight gain they had me do a 24 hour urine collection and I was put on MBR. Along with that I was told to cut back carbs and increase protein (because I had high amounts of amniotic fluid as well). So I went on a strict low carb/high protein diet (per my MFM). A week later at my follow-up I had lost 8 pounds, passed my 24 hour urine and also passed my GD test.

I'm 29 weeks now and total I have put on 20 pounds. So in the past 5 weeks I've really only put on about 3 pounds. The girls are growing perfectly (we're 2lbs 9oz each last Thursday at 28w4d).

Should I not be concerned since the girls are growing great? With DD I put on a good 40-45 pounds so I'm surprised that at 29 weeks I'm only at 20 pounds.

  • I have only gained 12 lbs and am 35 weeks tomorrow. I have tried everything and it is frustrating because I normally watch what I eat. However, weight gain is hard with a GD diet and bedrest.

My doctors (OB and MFM) are not concerned because my babies are healthy sized. As long as they are on track and being monitored, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Thank you so much ladies. Who knows, I may put on 20 pounds in the next 8 weeks. A lot of the weight with DD was water because I started swelling at 28 weeks. No swelling this time yet (and oddly enough, no pregnancy induced carpal tunnel either).

I mean I'm glad I haven't put on a ton, that means less to take off. And I'm only measuring 3-4 weeks ahead as well.

  • I only made it to 34+4 and had only gained 25lbs but I lost 10 in the beginning too so I guess technically I gained 35lbs. There wasn't a concern after I started gaining until I starting losing again at 34 weeks.

  • I've only gained @22pounds at 28 weeks and my doctor would have actually preferred me to gain less.  The boys are always measuring on the larger size for twins so I wouldn't worry.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • gosh at my 12 week apt I was up 14 pounds already!  I have never had a hard time putting on weight!  I am trying to watch what I eat now soo I dont put on a ton!

  • I've put on 30 so far, at 24.4 weeks.

It sounds like you are eating really healthy, and that you lost weight thanks to the diet you were on. As long as everyone is healthy, then no problem.

I am not stressing about my weight gain, just trying to make good decisions. That said, I have been craving chocolate like crazy and not stopping myself from having it!

With my singleton I put on 33 total now at 29 weeks with the twins my weight gain has only been 20 and been like that for a few weeks despite how much I eat and being on bed rest. My OB hasn't seemed worried both babies as of last u/s were great and no longer at risk for IUGR.

  • My OB told me that I really only needed to gain 25 pounds with this pregnancy.  I am at a normal height/weight, and was surprised, but thought it was good to know before I gain 50.

  • I gained right around 30 lbs and that was after a fierce battle with hyper emesis. My girls always measured well and were quite healthy weights at birth. If they're measuring well and your doctor isn't concerned,I wouldn't be either.
  • I am 23 weeks and I have gained 20 pounds. My doc wants me to gain a total of 40, but I just don't know if it's going to happen. I eat all day, I eat like its my job...for whatever reason it just doesn't want to stick. My babies are small so I am working really hard, but for some it just doesn't come easy. If your doc says you should gain more than of course you should try, but if you try and it isn't sticking don't beat yourself up. If your doc isn't concerned than you shouldn't be either!

  • I gained 60lbs in 34w. I was only up about 5 lbs at 16w and put on 2lbs per week from then on out.

Now at 3mo pp, I have about 5lbs to lose to get back to pp weight.

I just made smart food choices and let my body do what it wanted.

  • I am up 24lbs at 33w. My doc said they really don't use weight gain to determine how healthy the pregnancy is going and use ultrasound to determine that. If the babies are growing well and look great and healthy, enjoy the fact that you won't have to loose as much after they're here!!
  • I know this can be uo, but I really believed in and followed the dr Luke weight gain recommendations. My hospital has an amazing MoMs group an offered weekly classes with social workers, specialists and nutritionists. Our nutritionist really pushed that the more weight you gained the better for multiple pregnancies. The research she based her recommendations on indicated a direct correlation between weight, birth weight and when you deliver.
It was super hard and eating felt like a second job. I just wasn't hungry. But in the end I did about 55lbs and made it to 37 weeks. My girls were 6lbs 5oz and 7lbs 7oz. I know there are a lot of success stories where women gained a lot less and were super healthy. But my thought was, what do I have to loose? (Besides 50lbs?! Haha) it might have felt extreme, but so are twin pregnancies.
See if you can get in touch with a nutritionist who understands multiples pregnancies if your worried or want better guidelines. It was really amazing to have that support and help.
  • I'm 36+3 and have gained 26lbs. Babies are doing great and none of the doctors have said a word. I'm miserable carrying this extra 26, I can't imagine how I'd feel with another 10 or 20. I walked or swam for as long as I could so that hopefully my recovery won't take too long.
  • I'm glad you posted this! I've gained 24 lbs at 28 weeks. My ob hasn't said a word until yesterday and he said my weight gain was "ok" but I "better gain at least 15 more lbs"!! I am eating all the time! I can't help that I haven't put on more weight. I just can't gain much. In my singleton pregnancies I only gained 19 lbs with one and 17 with the other. Compared to all these responses, it seems like I'm doing ok, so that makes me feel much better after my appt yesterday.
