2nd Trimester

Small on the percentile

Hi There

At each of our scans (12,20,24 weeks) our little girl has shown to be at the lowest end of the size percentile. Does anyone know if this has any future bearing?

Thanks

Re: Small on the percentile

  • What was the percentile?

  • Both of my kids measured in the less than the 3rd, mainly because DH and I are short and small. Take a look at your family. Don't be too concerned unless there is a genetic anomaly in the family that is of concern. Are they thinking the baby may have achondroplasia? Typically with that, the babies head would be larger and the chest cavity would be disproportionate. I'm sure he/she is perfectly healthy, just a peanut :) gl
  • Thanks Erinvp120. The doctors aren't worried and say it's perfectly fine. I'm just shocked because I'm 5'8" and my husband is 6'3". We are both slim/skinny people though. Thanks for your help.
BabyLOLO13 it's the measurement scale they use in Australia. Thanks again
  • I had that with my first. He did end up being IUGR (his head grew drastically ahead of his belly and his belly was very far behind AND he was tiny). He is  perfectly fine and healthy now and you'd never know! If your doctor isn't worried and is continuing to monitor it, then you should be okay ! I doubt they'd worry unless something else happens too (like the belly stops growing). Good luck!

I'm just trying to make sense of things :-)
  • I was never given percentile reading with my first two, but my oldest was in the 5th % when she was born. She's now 5 years old and has remained between the 3rd & 5th % for weight her entire life and is completely healthy. The only thing is as told about the baby girl I'm currently carrying is that she's "on the small side of normal".

  • Both of my kids were small and the one I'm carrying now is small as well. Some times thy just develop on the smaller side. I wouldn't be worried at all. It will gain weight at the rate it feels comfortable. And remember U/S measurements can be off

  • I have the opposite DS1 has always been at 75-85%tile for weight and 95%tile for height. I'm 5'3" and DH is 6'0". So we aren't huge. Remember percentiles are on a bell curve some are on one end some are at the other the majority is in the middle.

  • My middle was low on the percentiles based on us measurements. She was my biggest baby at nearly 10lbs and 22" long. I don't pay any attention to percentiles anymore.
  • DD2 was measuring completely average in utero but was small at birth - only 6lbs at 39w, about 10th% I think. She has stayed small, bouncing around anywhere from 2% to 16% for weight over the last two years. She's been diagnosed with a growth delay, which really doesn't mean anything other than she doesn't follow a growth curve. She's perfectly healthy, just petite.

  • Our daughter was the same way. We weren't worried and either was our doctor because of how my husband and I are both built. I wouldn't be too worried about it.
