Lucia/Lucy

How do YOU pronounce Lucia when you come across it?

How many little girls are really named Lucy? I see it ranking in the top 100 but I have never ran into one!

Re: Lucia/Lucy

  • You know, when I first saw the title, my immediate thought was to pronounce it "LOO-sha" like the island. Then right after I thought "Or maybe OP is thinking "loo-SEE-uh".

I also do not know any Lucys in real life. Perhaps it's a very regional name. Either way, it's one of my favorite names!

  • Lou chee ah

because im Italian and that is how we pronounce it

  • I personally prefer the Loo-see-a pronunciation, but the other two are just as legitimate.

  • I am hoping if we went for it people would pronounce it "Loo-Sha" but I am wondering how likely that really is. I certainly don't want to doom a possible DD to a life of correcting pronunciation. Though, we would likely use the NN Lucy quite often....so maybe it wouldn't be a big deal!

  • I know a little Lucia (loo-SEE-uh). I prefer Loo-sha or loo-CHEE-uh. But it's a lovely name regardless.

My default is the Spanish pronunciation, Loo SEE ah, because everyone around here uses it whether they are Hispanic or not. I hear Lucia/Lucy often.
DS1 has a Lucia in his grade, DS2 has a Lucia in his class, and a friend named her daughter Lucia last year.

  • I like them both, I pronounce Lucia (Loo-chee-uh).

Love Lucy. I have never met another Lucy in real life, and I work in a hospital. I have met a lot of Lucilles and Lillians !

My DS's name is Brady and we have never met another Brady either and that name is also ranked just over 100 something.

This.  Although, it depends on context; if I met a Lucia I knew was from a Spanish-speaking background I'd say loo-SEE-ah.

I adore Lucy.  DH nixed it so I'll never get to use it, but I think it's a great name.  I don't know any girls named Lucy, just cats, which to me is not a bad thing.

  • I say Loo-sha. And I love this pronunciation. I took it off our list however because most people seem to pronounce it one of the two other ways.

  • Our next door neighbor is named Lucia and she pronounces it Lou-chee-ah. She is from a very Italian family.

I know a few Lucys but not so many that I would call it super popular. I definitely know more Sophias, Isabelles and Mollys.

  • I like loo see ah. Dd#2 due in dec will be Lucy Beatrice
  • Loo-see-uh.  I've only ever met one Lucy IRL, but it is what we're naming DD2.  I love it!

I have an aunt named Lucia--for us it's LOO-SHA. Haven't known any outside of that one aunt so only hear it pronounced that way...didn't even really think of other ways.

I don't know too many Lucy's at all. I wanted to have Lucille on our list nn Lucy but DH nixed it.

  • I intuitively pronounce it loo-SEE-uh, but I know there are two other pronunciations and I think both are extremely learnable.

I know one child named Lucy. She's DD1's age. Have you looked at the SSA list by numbers? Even in the top 100, there are several names that were used on only a few thousand children children in a given year. Lucy was only given to 3700 babies last year. That's not very many at all, spread across an entire country's population.

You can also look at numbers of births by state. It might be even less common in your state than others.

  • Lou see ah and Lou chee ah are both correct. Prefer the italian pronunciation Lou chee ah
