Parenting after a Loss

How much does your Lo drink?

The past few days Jackson has not been a fan of formula. He drinks water with his meals and I know he's hydrated but he went from drinking every 4-6 hours to going well over 12 hours for a bottle. He just had his first bottle today about 30 minutes ago. (3:45) and his previous bottle was 1am almost 15 hours prior. He had pancakes for breakfast and grilled cheese for lunch. Dinner will be veggies and fruit. Should I be concerned? I don't want to introduce whole milk til 11 months which is the 18th. Would you be concerned? On the upside he typically STTN well 7p to 1a drinks a bottle then back asleep immediately after til 7-8a. This is a huge success. If he eats before bed he sleeps worse. He's not hungry for a bottle but typically has dinner around 6-630 which is usually veggies, fruit with with turkey or chicken. All table food cut into pieces.

Re: How much does your Lo drink?

  • By that time, DS1 was getting ~3 bottles a day, 6oz each. Around 11 months we cut back to 2 bottles a day (first thing in the morning and right before bed) and gave him a sippy with milk with breakfast and dinner (he didn't really drink it much, though).. By 12 months, we were completely off bottles and he was drinking ~3-6oz of whole milk 2x/day.  Ped says she'd like to see him drinking more milk (10-20oz/day), but weight wise he's well on the growth chart, so it's not been that big of a deal.  DS1 has always been a very good eater.. he just started losing interest in the bottles.. instead of taking a bottle and drinking it down, he'd crawl around with it, sipping some here and there, but mostly leaking it on the floor.. approaching the 11 month mark when I was still doing 3 bottles a day, it would take over an hour for him to drink it because instead he just played with it.. the nice thing was by him losing interest, weaning him off the bottle was easy.  We never put whole milk in a bottle.. always in a sippy.. and when we decided to get rid of the morning bottle it took about 3 days of him not taking any milk.. simply because he didn't want to drink it out of a sippy.. but, because he ate breakfast so well, it wasn't that huge of a deal.. so by the 3rd day, he gave in and drank the milk.. never went back :)  Some may say being off bottles before 1 year is too early, but we did it because I wanted him weaned before DS2 was born.. and, thankfully, we have virtually no issues with reverting back to wanting the bottle.. occasionally he steals DS2s bottle and will take a swig and then spit it out LOL.. Anyway, I sort of rambled, but all in all it sounds like he's getting plenty of nutrients from table food.. maybe when you intro milk, like PP said, offer that with his meals so he's still getting the calcium and such.. that's what we still do.. breakfast and dinner he gets milk in a sippy and then lunch he gets water as well as the rest of the day.  HTH :)

  • @julymomma thank you. Jackson does the same thing with a bottle and it ends up on him vs his mouth. He plays with it and lets it dribble out. But when he's really hungry for a bottle he down 8 oz in 3 minutes. He will play with milk and dribble it but when he has water he actually drinks it. Usually his meals are much more nutrition based of veggies fruit but today just was more of a whole wheat carb kind of day. I asked the pedi about whole milk and she said 11-11.5 months. When he transitioned to formula at 9 months when I ran out of breast milk and dried out he never really was a fan. I'll start doing some Greek yogurt daily. Even tho he really doesn't like to be fed.

Thank You Ladies. I had this transition issue from day 1 but now that he eats better I think he's opting for no formula. I don't want to give whole milk before 11 months.
