I've heard to wait a month before taking a newborn out. My babies are 2 weeks old, I mentioned going to the mall, just to walk around. I was immediately scolded for this by family members. I get the whole germ concern... but I hate being cooped up in my house! When we need to get groceries or run errands one of us stays home with the babies. We have taken them on short walks for about a week or so. I just want to get out more.
When did you start taking baby out in public?
Re: Taking baby out.
My daughter is almost 6 weeks, and I take her for frequent walks outside. I feel like that is almost more dangerous as far as germs go, since my neighbors' kids always get a little too close for comfort... ;-) At least most strangers do not try to come close to the baby, and it is easier to be rude to them if they do ;-) My husband and I take our daughter out to eat with us at least once a week...we just request to eat outside, or inside far away from other people, and we keep her covered in her carseat/stroller the whole time. We took her out to eat with us the first time when she was just about 2 weeks old, and I was a little nervous...but I thought about it logically and realized she was safer in that setting than she was in the germy doctor's office for the visits she had at 1 and 2 weeks old!

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hot-wired, heat seeking, warm-hearted cool customer, voice activated and bio-degradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.
I started taking DS out when he was 3 days old (he is now 9 weeks). Running errands, grocery store, out to eat etc. I kept him in the carseat and usually put a blanket over it. Its not like he is crawling around on dirty floors or something. Also, I would use hand sanitzer or wash before I handled him if we were out (made me feel better if nothing else!!
). Honestly I never understood why people are so crazy about this "don't take your baby out rule" unless there are medical reasons. Its not like I am letting strangers get close to him or touch him.
