Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Diaper bags likes/dislikes

DS is 13 months and our 1st diaper bag is showing its wear and hasn't worked super well for us. We got the skip hop via messenger bag and it seems it has not really been big enough all along particulary for all day outings and going to the sitter (we often are carrying an additonal bag). I like to keep about 5 diapers, a thing of wipes, an extra change of clothes, a blanket, a bib, a few small toys, a pacifier, sunglasses, hat, baby products (lotions, creams, soaps etc), the changing pad, nursing cover, and his food which right now for a day would be 1 bottle, 1 cup, and 4 containers of some sort of food.

So I think we need something bigger, but I'm not sure I want it to be huge (like for those times we just are out of the house for an hour, but maybe we'll just start using a smaller mini bag or something). I've looked at a few bag, but I'm just not sure which to choose so I thought I'd get some experienced mom's advice on what has worked well. We like that the skip hop attaches to the stroller and I recently saw some fischer price ones that have the wipes easily accessible which seemed like a good idea too.

So what bag are you using? Do you like it or hate it? What do you like about it?

We had the Via Messenger also and right around the same mark, I got tired of it too.  I thought it was great for the early days when I wanted to know exactly where everything was. Eventually, I felt like it was too narrow.  Now, pretty much any large tote bag and a diaper pod can work for us, although I do still carry a diaper bag.  I have the Kate Spade Serena.  I don't think it's a current model (I found it at the outlet), but I like it because it still has compartments but has much more room on the inside, and it pretty much looks like any large purse and doesn't scream diaper bag.

  • i just bought a bag from vera bradley (early christmas present) for our twins' stuff.  their diaper bags look great and my friend who has one loooooves hers.  it's got nice compartments and such.  i bought the big traveler bag (in the travelling section) since i'm an over-packer even for small outings so i wanted something bigger than a regular diaper bag size.  it's beautiful!
  • I would just keep that bag you got but leave it in the car.  Throw a diaper/wipes/sippy in your purse and if you NEED any of that other stuff, you can run back to the car.

I stopped carrying the big diaper bag around a year.  It stays in the car but I can't remember the last time I actually had to get anything out of it.  This reminds me that I should check the extra outfit and make sure it's the right size.
  • Maybe look into the Ju-ju-be BFF or some of their other bags.  Highly organized and well made.  I have and love mine but I use it for 2 kids but I wouldn't want to carry a bag that big for only 1 kid. Sounds like you could use 2 diaper bags... something small for day to day and something larger for the sitter and all day trips.

I agree with the others that your packing a lot unless you are out all day all the time, I can't imagine carrying that much for most of our activities.  I keep changes of clothes, extra diapers, blankets, baby toiletries, etc in the car and I carry the bare minimum.

  • Another vote for keeping the big bag in the car and taking the essentials in with you.

If you're looking for a giant bag, I'd recommend the Marc Jacobs Eliz-A-Baby Bag. It's almost like a small weekender so I use it for that, too.

  • I would not recommend the Fisher Price bag. It's nice to have easy access to wipes but the inside of our bag has totally ripped. It's so bad that I can't repair it and we're now looking for another bag. I'm enjoying reading all the recommendations.

  • I honestly stopped carrying a diaper bag for DS. For the most part I just throw a few diapers, wipes, and cup in my purse. I've never carried as much as you to. When we are out for an all day outing and I am carrying quite a bit I carry my Vera tote. It holds so much stuff, has 6 inside, 2 outside pockets, and I am in love with the pattern.
