Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

18 mo weighs 20 pounds

should i be worried?  doc didn't seem worried, but he was in a hurry (we caught him in between patients) and said that it looks as though she did gain weight from her 15 month appt.  i think she might have gained some weight (i have to look back and see how much she weighed at the last appt) but i think it was only like a pound or so.  the way they weighed her though could have contributed since dd was screaming i stepped on the scale and then stepped on holding her so they simply calculated the difference.  anyway...help!

  • My LO hasnt been gaining much either but she has been getting taller. I've heard that it's normal.

  • I wouldn't be worried.  Is she still on her normal curve?  Meeting developmental milestones and thriving?  Weight gain slows down significantly after age 1 compared to when they're infants.  From 15 months to 18 months, DS2 gained 5oz I think?  I wouldn't be worried unless your doctor is worried or there is just something nagging in your gut telling you to worry.
  • I also heard once they start walking kids don't gain as much because they're burning more calories.

  • Did they not talk to you about her percentiles and where she's falling compared to her prior percentiles? DS is on the bigger side for his age (18 months and 26 lbs) but he only gained a couple oz from 15 months to 18 months so his percentile dropped slightly.  They pointed that out but said nothing to be worried about now; it was just something to watch for in his next appointment.

Were you otherwise worried about her weight even prior to her appointment? Worried about how she's eating and if it's not enough?  If not, I'd probably just trust what your doctor said. But if something is worrying you, I wouldn't hesitate to schedule a follow up appointment to make sure you can get all your questions answered.

  • DD was 20.5lbs at her 18m appt.  19.8lbs at her 15m.  She has stayed on the same 5% curve since birth so Dr and I are not concerned.  Some kids are big, some are small....don't stress it!

he did speak very briefly about percentiles...she was on track with head circumference, height and slightly off with weight...still moving upwards, but not where it should be.  i think i might call since this is something that may weigh on my mind all weekend.  :/
  • My dd was just under 20 lbs at 18 months. She gained from 15 month weight and is on the same growth chart so we aren't worried. Lily is just petite. Not all babies are off the charts and that's ok.
  • My LO is 24 pounds at 22 months and hasn't gained weight in months. I am not concerned.

  • Mine were only around 20 pounds at their 18 month check up. One weight doesn't mean anything. As others have said, it's the continued pattern that means something. Honestly, if my girls weighed much more then that at their 18 month checkup that would have been more of a cause for concern because a huge jump in weight only would be an anomaly. If she's gained weight and is following her curve then she's fine. Weight gain also slows down a lot at this age, so you won't see big jumps like you did when she was younger. If your doctor isn't concerned then there is no reason at all to worry. FWIW, DD2 was 20lbs 8oz at her 18 month check up (a 10 ounce gain from 15 months) and they marked that as being in the 20%. If you look back in her records and see that she's within a good range of what percentile she was in at 15 months I wouldn't worry one bit.

  • thanks you guys...I did make a call on Friday afternoon, spoke with a nurse who basically said what you guys said....that she's still growing (even if it's not much) and it's about the bigger picture, not just the one weight.  I do feel better...I am a worry-wart and very paranoid so I can let this one go!  thanks again!!
  • My 3.5 year old weighs 29 pounds on a good day.  He's just skinny.

  • Totally normal. They slow down on growth as they get older.
My daughter is a peanut...I think she was only 19lbs at her 1 year appointment but had grown 1.5 inches. My doctor told me not to worry as long as she is growing and gaining weight. He said she just has a small frame and is a more slender child.
After 2 years of TTC, our daughter was born on Oct 31, 2011!

  • DD was under 20 lbs at 18 months.  She was above average weight at birth but started tending toward the 10th-15th percentile in weight by the time she was a year old, and in between 15 and 18 months she gained very little weight.  She's just been petite most of her life.  The absolute number doesn't matter as much as whether it's in line with your child's growth pattern up to this point.
    DD born 10/10/07 * DS born 11/25/11 * #3 due 3/9/2015
  • my DD didn't weigh 20lbs until she was almost 20 months.  As long as they are growing and eating and the dr doesn't say anything about being concerns its fine.

  • My LO is the same and I'm not worried. I feed him and he eats when he is hungry.
