I was going to start a discussion about this today but figured most of us Jan moms are not far enough along yet. No, but I get mine on October 29th. I'll be getting my shot from the hospital the day before and heard it can take up to 3 hours to get with the blood test and other things. Yuck! I'll be 29 weeks when I get mine. I lurked on the Dec 2013 board sicne they have been talking about it and some recommend getting the shot in the butt rather than the arm so that is what I will do. My OB said I may have tenderness but nothing too crazy as a side effect. I'm sure you will do great, don't be nervous. Please let me know how it goes for you. Good luck!
I'll also be getting it on the 29th (I'll be 28 weeks). I'm not too worried about it though

@ashleywiz from my understanding it is actualy quite harmful if you are a negative blood type and don't take it, especially for future pregnancies. At least that is how I understand it. I am O - so I will be getting it like PP at 29 weeks and again after delivery.
@kristabelieve ---that's what I thought. I'm A+ so I read into it a little but as a + type I knew I didn't need to worry about it. I just knew that if I was a - type that you have to get it and that not getting it can be dangerous for both mommy and baby.
My blood type is A- so I have to get it. I'm scheduled to get mine at my next appointment (Oct.16th) and another one after the baby is born. I'm curious, why are you nervous about it?
I got one after my miscarriage last year. My midwife doesn't think I shound mess with it during pregnancy because it's really only effective within a 72 hr window of blood sharing with the fetus. So there being a "right" time (28 wks) to get the shot doesn't really mean anything unless there's been abdominal trauma or spotting. Since it's derived from other people's blood I'm skipping it until post partum.
I'm AB- but I'm in the process of getting my DH to get his blood type before I agree to take the rhogam shot. If DH is negative, I'm going to decline because it isn't necessary and I would prefer not to get a shot of human blood product unless absolutely necessary.
I'm getting mine on Wednesday. Getting a shot is never fun, but it's really nothing to be nervous about. It's a protective measure for you and your baby, so if you're a negative blood type, you should be getting it.
I've gotten 5 between my losses and pregnancy with DS and it's nothing. Just another blood draw and shot of the many received in the duration of your pregnancy. This is actually the first pregnancy I haven't gotten the rhogam shot before 28 weeks. I'll get mine at 28 weeks and do my glucose test all in one.
Purely out of curiosity, does everyone here know that their DH/SO has a positive blood type, or has everyone just gotten the shot regardless? Because it's not necessary if the father also has a negative blood type, because the baby will as well. I don't know, maybe I'm just weird for not wanting to take any chances with other people's blood products during pregnancy if I don't have to.
I just got my second shot today, 27w3d. I had gotten one back in June after a minor accident that led to some weird spotting. I don't need another now til labor. To be honest, I never gave it a second thought. I don't know what blood type my SO is, but I trust my doctor so I go along with it.
@Jennoak, I've gotten them both in the arm, and haven't had any side effects. And today I also got a flu shot and that was worse.
I've gotten two due to losses. I'm negative and H is positive. Both times in hip/butt area. No side effects. I'll get one for this pregnancy at my next appt at 28 weeks
I had one at 10 weeks and I'll have one Wednesday at 28 weeks. I'm also terrified of needles, however it is not that bad. I remember my arm being somewhat sore after my first one, but nothing unbearable. Just glad to help my little guy out

I'm B- and H is A+. DD is also B-, so I did not have to get the second shot after delivery last time.

My understanding is the Obgyn checks your blood type at the initial appointment so ask your doc. I guess they don't check dh because if you are negative, it is just better to have the shot. If you are positive, you don't need it. As others said, it can cause complications in future pregnancies if you are negative and baby is positive and it mixes. Even if dh is negative, I have read that if other family members are positive it is better to have it.
I found out I'm O- after my mmc and had the shot in my thigh. I had bleeding early on in this pregnancy and had one in the butt. I didn't have any issue with the shot but after several ivf's and surgeries, shots do not bother me at all. The flu shot made my arm sore for three days but the rhogam didn't hurt at all. I should be getting it next month. Doc already ordered it for me.

I got mine today. It was no big deal. Got it in the butt. Took about 5 mins! You'll b fine
Thanks for making my morning
I used to get Lupron shots as treatment for my endo and those were far worse than the Rhogam. It used to swell and hurt at the injection site. This was more just annoying. Lol

I'm O-, DH is A+. So yes, it was necessary for us. DS1 is O+. I'm not sure what DS2 is.
I'll get mine next Wed at my 28 week appt and I had it twice with DS as well (at 28 weeks and then at the hospital). I had no reaction to it and got it in the butt since my nurse recommended that spot over the thigh. Try not to worry
Because my gem of a boyfriend dropped off the face of the planet when he found out I was pregnant last time, I got it to be on the safe side. My son was rh+ so I'm glad that I did.
This pregnancy: I am O-, DH is O+. I will be getting the shot. My OB recommends the shot no matter what, and I guess that's her call. If DH and I were both negative I would have declined.
If you haven't been told about the shot, why you may need it, or what its purpose is I really recommend talking to your OB about it. It's a big deal. If you do not carry the rh proteins in your blood(rh -), but you have a baby who does (this genetic trait would then come from dad), your body will be ready to fight future pregnancies where the baby is rh+ like an infection.
@pennstate. I noticed how that sounded after I posted it and thought about editing it but said to myself 'feck it no, Ill leave it. Might make someone laugh.' Glad I made your morning
I'm O- and DH isn't sure what he is. Dr didn't ask about DH. Had Rhogam shot early on for bleeding. It was no big deal at all. Forgot I'd had it by the end of the day. Getting it again when I go back for my next appointment.
I am A- and will be getting it a few days before my 28 week appt. I do not know DH's blood type. I guess I'm confused though is it a shot AND a blood draw? The reason I'm asking is that I thought it was just a draw to determine if the shot was needed? Maybe I misunderstood....it could be that my drs office does it differently?
I'm due Dec 31 and I just had the shot at my last appointment (27 weeks). The nurse warned me it might hurt but it really was no big deal. I think having it in the arm might hurt more than in the leg or butt. I'm A-, my husband got his blood tested at my OB's office before I had the shot to confirm I needed it and he is +. I felt fine afterwards. Don't worry about it!
I'm A+, so I'm assuming that's why I didn't get one with DD. But I don't know what blood type DH is. Does his matter if I'm rh positive?
You will never need the shot. Your blood already carries the protein that the shot contains. And also I'm a little jealous because my first round made my arm sore for an entire day. I'd buy a positive blood type from you if I could.
