Sleeping question

My DD is a month old (officially today!!). We co-sleep at night and during the day she naps either in my arms or in her swing or RNP.
About 75% of the time I put her down so I can shower, make food, or go to the bathroom, she lasts maybe 5 minutes before she wakes up crying. She is pretty good at falling asleep and staying on her own at night, though. I am just wondering what other mom's, who practice AP would do in this situation.

BTW, I am about to start wearing her during the day...but I can't exactly wear her in the shower, as much as she would love it. haha

Re: Sleeping question

  • When my kids were that little I just put them in the bouncer in the bathroom while I showered - usually while they were awake and happy.  Sometimes they did cry a bit so I'd just talk to them until I was out.  You've gotta shower ;)  I did wear them for all of their naps though so everything else could get done while they slept on me.

  • I don't have personal experience to draw from since my DS has always stayed asleep when I put him down, but if I were in your position, I'd probably just wear her while making food and even going to the bathroom. Obviously you can't do that while showering, so for that I'd shower while she's awake and happy. Maybe right when she's woken up from a nap, has been fed and changed. Like PP said, put her in a bouncer or something in the bathroom with you.
  • I did the same thing as @ncbelle.  I put him in the bathroom with me while I showered.  Ours had a vibrating feature that kept him pretty happy.  Also, I showered with the curtain open, so he could see me and I could see him.  I angled the showerhead to the wall so it didn't splash out as much.

  • I took VERY quick showers in the early days and went around with a wet head for months. On the plus side, my hair was never healthier :). I did get about 20 minutes in the swing so I would make a fast meal, usually a cold sandwich during that time. Some days I would wait for hubs to come home so I could take a longer more luxurious shower. I spent probably 90% of my maternity leave holding him. He hated being worn in the early days. Thank goodness he loves it now! Recently i was having major issues with crying during my shower in the morning. I took my shower curtain down and just have the clear liner up. I talk and sing it him too.

  • I brought DD on the shower with me. She hated baths anyway. She's really only ever had 3 baths. She has showered with me since she was 2 or 3 weeks old. She loves the shower!
As far as the rest goes I could pretty much use the moby from day one because she was born at 8lb 13oz. I think I started using the moby in week 3 though. They do make mesh slings for showers and swimming. I saw them on etsy and really want one as DH and I love the beach and it would come in handy.
Now she is almost 7 months and wants out of the carriers most of the time bc she is obsessed with standing crawling and pulling up/cruising. She still loves showers though.
I guess my personal focus is on how much can she do with me? I try to include her as much as I can.

  • Ditto the bouncy chair in the bathroom. DD had an uncanny ability to be sleeping peacefully, no matter how long she'd been asleep, until the exact moment I put shampoo in my hair, and therefore couldn't get out of the shower to get her ;-). The bouncy chair solved everything!

  • Same for me...at 7months I still bring her in the bathroom with me when I bathe (dislike showers).  She sits in her chair (it's the rocking one that goes to 45lbs).  I tried a few times when she was down for a nap but never failed she would wake and I'd go running down the hall leaving a trail of water.

My daughter is very easy going and happy and she can self entertain for long periods but when she is upset she is upset and has no means to calm herself so leaving her crying in crib for a few mintues while I rinse and dry is just too much for her still.

The only issue we have now is she freaks when I wrap my hair in a towel.  The first time she freaked so bad I had to nurse her to get her calm.  Now we are down to an unsettled look and slight fussing until I remove it.
