Convertible Car Seat

So we switched LO to a convertible seat in DH's car and this is where his legs hit. I thought they were supposed to have more room in a convertible seat?? I asked the carseat reps at BRU and they said all seats fit this way. So please educate me do I need a different seat or are their legs supposed to be like this what happens when he gets bigger where do his legs go?

  • I guess it's supposed to be okay for their legs to be bent and touching the back of the seat. But how comfortable can that be? I know I like to stretch my lanky legs out from time to time on a long ass car ride to grandma's house.
  • Their legs just bend. My niece was rear facing till 3 years and she just bent her legs up. Looked uncomfortable to me but she never complained. Little kids are bendy.
This. DD1 is 37 inches at 22 months (99th %ile) and her legs just bend or she crosses them or flops them over the sides of the seat. It's perfectly okay for them.

  • Yes! It's called car seats for the littles ...on Facebook. Legs touching the seat is 130000% okay and normal!
Google extended rear facing and you'll see tons of 4yo LOs rear facing with crossed legs. Think of it like sitting in a recliner with your legs kicked up (RF) or sitting on a bar stool with your legs dangling (FF) which would be more comfortable? Same goes for kids.

  • They bend. It's fine and 100% safe. Charlie is almost 3 (and is 38" tall) and sits RF in a Radian. :-)

Even FF, kids pull their legs up to be more comfortable. Otherwise it's just dead weight hanging and their little legs fall asleep.

  • My DD1 is front-facing, and still rides cross-legged or with one foot up on the door. Kids really are comfy in all kinds of weird positions!
  • Car seats for the littles on facebook is a very helpful group. I had some questions about a convertible carseat and they got back to me right away.

  • Not a great pic, but here's DD2 rfing at 3 years, 34 lbs, and 41". She crosses her legs or stretches them around the sides of the seat. DD1 used to still sit with her legs crossed even after we switched her ffing.
