Not rolling over?

Anyone else's LO not rolling over? C will be 20 weeks on Wednesday. About a month ago he rolled from back to front and hasn't rolled since. He is on the bigger side, like the 95th percentile for everything. Do bigger babies take longer to roll, crawl and walk? Just something I was wondering about.

Re: Not rolling over?

  • My LO is 18 weeks today. A week ago, she rolled tummy to back 3 times in a row, but hasn't done it since. Not even close. She's 89th %ile for weight and 96th %ile for length.

  • My DS isn't rolling yet either and he turned five months yesterday. I have to be honest though - he wasn't getting a whole lot of floor time because I was always afraid DS1 would trample him. Now that he's a little bigger, I put him down more and he's really close

I think babies just do things when they are ready. MY sons were big but did physical things early. My niece was fairly average sized and was late to crawl, sit, roll and walk. I have heard people say size can matter but it has not made a difference for anyone I know.

I really just think that given the chance babies will do what they want as they are ready. My youngest niece didn`t crawl until after she could walk.

EDIT From what I have read I think the range of when babies do things is pretty big. 20 weeks doesn`t sound late.

EDIT I was 33 lbs by the time I was 9 months old, so pretty chubby.(but not overly huge) I did everything early. My brother was a thin baby and did everything within the average. To be fair by the time I was 2 I had not gained any weight, only height.
  • I've got a non-roller here. She's 5 months as of Saturday (22 weeks yesterday). We got all excited over labor day weekend (first weekend in Sept for non-US peeps) because she rolled tummy to back a couple times, but hasn't done it since and from what I can tell has absolutely no interest in rolling other than when she's trying to eat her feet and kind of falls to her side.

She's not even on the scale for weight/length though (zero percentile in both), so maybe it's the "extremes" on both ends that take a while to roll, crawl and walk? I thought that maybe it had something to do with her head size since that's really big for her body...

  • LO is 19 weeks and hasn't rolled at all. She has come close a few times. She still HATES tummy time, but I try to do it as much as I can. The doctor said that will help strengthen the muscles she needs to use to roll.

She is quite chunky and my mom says chunkier babies do things later...but...my mom says a lot of things haha

  • Scormier- my son hates tummy time as well. He actually did it today, propped up on the boppy and was fine for about 5-10 minutes. Normally he cries the entire time.

I guess I'll just keep enforcing tummy time and see what happens. He's way more interested in sitting up.

  • Lexie has zero interest in rolling over and only halfway gets there when she is flailing around crying for attention. She also couldn't care less about her feet. They'll all get there eventually!
    She is here! 5-29-13

  • DD is 20w and rolled tummy to back for a few days a few weeks ago, but has no interest in doing it now. She's trying to roll back to tummy and it's quite amusing to watch her flail her arm trying to get over the hump of her other arm.

They'll all do it when they're ready. Just try to encourage your LO by putting a toy above them so they have to bend and twist to see it.

  • M rolled over six times one night at 10 weeks. And only twice since then. She's never rolled from back to front. She's 18 weeks. Not sure of her percentiles now. Appointment is next week. She's probably 75% is my guess. She is not a fan of tummy time but even if I try to wait it out for her to roll over she won't do it.

I'd put a Movember mustache fail, but then
you'd all have to look at it until February.
  • My big guy used to be able to roll before he packed on the pounds. He rolled when he first turned 3 months for three days in a row and then never did it since. Today was the first time he was able to roll back to front and I feel like he couldn't previously because he's such a chunk. That's just my guess though. Maybe it's just coincidence?
  • Our babies share a birthday and DD hasn't rolled over or grabbed her feet. She is so stinkin close but I think she just doesn't want to.

She also hates tummy time so that isn't helping.
  • Pedi told me not to expect it until about 6 months. DD1 didn't roll until about 7-8 months. DD2 has been rolling back and forth for the last two weeks. She's in the 85th percentile for weight.

  • @Shantxtell almost every time. DD has reflux, pretty sure that is why she has such a deep hatred for tummy time.
  • Does anybody else's kid puke every time they're on their tummy? Vi rolls and then spits up, even if it's been hours.
yep. we just put a burp cloth under her whenever we do tummy time since we know something's gonna come up.

  • My LO spits up a lot when she is on her tummy and when she is sitting up. All that pressure on her tummy I guess !
Babies will do things on their own time line, my SILs ex fiancé is a big guy always has been and he was walking when he was 6 months old! His parents found him once on the roof
Of his house when he was 1 year old !! Can you imagine?! So ya some babies are early others later, makes no difference :)

Yea mines will be 5months on the 12th (no clue on how many weeks) and he rolled from tummy to back a couple of times but hasn't done it since. Like you he's more interested in his feet and rolls from side to side and loves sitting up. He also hates tummy time and just face plants until I pick him up.

Yep. But my kid spits up all the time anyway. He's a happy spitter.

  • Mine has rolled a few times, but he doesn't do it regularly.  You're not alone.
  • We don't do tummy time anymore.... Instead we do something else.. Used to call it bedtime.

Don't worry! LO will roll when ready. I mentioned to my mom I was worried DS wasn't rolling. Within days he started rolling. Now he doesn't stop which makes sleeping a blast! (Insert sarcasm).

  • My LO rolled once from tummy to back about 3 weeks ago and has not done it again since. She's 22 weeks. She also shows no interest in her feet. They will all reach their milestones at their own pace. She does have reflux and spits up while sitting or on tummy time.
  • No spitting up, he can roll, just doesnt really. He much prefers to scoot in a 360. I think he is 30 percentile weight.

  • My guy is 21 weeks and close to rolling over on his own, but hasn't yet figured out how to get past his arm. Plenty of company for your lo!
  • FWIW C rolled tummy to back early so she could end tummy time whenever she wanted and she showed no interest in rolling back to tummy until a little while ago. Now she insists on doing it ALL.THE.TIME. It makes changing diapers impossible and when she does get to her tummy she tries frantically to crawl and screams hysterically because she is so frustrated. It's not better when they can roll. Your LO will do it eventually, try to enjoy your non mobile baby a long as possible.

Z has been rolling in both directions for quite a whil
e now, and what laxminakvar said is so true! I put her down for tummy time on a blanket, walk to the adjacent room to get a drink, and she's on the other side of the room under the sofa!! We can't set her down on a bed or anything unless we are right there cause she just rolls and rolls and rolls.  So definitely enjoy the non-mobile stage while it lasts.  And from what I've heard, anywhere from 4-6 months is totally normal for starting to roll.  I just try to remind myself that each little person is an individual.  They'll do these things when they're ready.
