Baby Proofing....

My LO is on the verge of crawling which means I need to start baby proofing but I don't know where to start besides outlet plugs.  We don't have stairs so that is not an issue.  There are so many different latches, pads, etc...Can you recommend any that work better than others or anything I should skip all together?

Thanks!

Re: Baby Proofing....

  • We only put the drawer pull things on drawers that had dangerous items in them in our kitchen. For awhile there she was pulling things out of the other drawers but it only lasted a short time.  I redirected her a lot and now she could care less about what's in the kitchen.  We did those and outlet covers at the time.  We just put the doorknob covers on so she can't get outside by herself but I waited until we absolutely had to do that because they are SO annoying!

I think there's a lot of overkill in the baby safety shopping market.  Companies will make it seem like you need so many things to keep your baby safe.  Some common sense and redirection goes a long way.  At the time I also thought that she would never stop getting into stuff in the kitchen but really now looking back, she was only into that for a short period of time before she found it less exciting and moved onto other things.

  • We will be doing outlet covers and cabinet locks on the few cabinets where I keep cleaning supplies/toxic substances. The cabinet locks we have are the ones that require magnets on the outside for the lock to flip open on the inside. I'm moving my hair products from the lower bathroom cabinets up higher where she couldn't get them.

That's it. We have a one-level house, so no need for a baby gate at a stairway. I'm not really worried since DD is either almost always within my line of sight, or strapped into a highchair/bouncer/walker. I'm starting to put her in the PNP when I make supper and can't watch her constantly.

I would recommend securing the TVs too... There are something like a dozen baby/toddler deaths a year due to falling TVs now that they're flat screens (narrow and tip-able).
  • I just shopped for this stuff yesterday, and got the magnetic cabinet latches and outlet plugs.  I think a lot of the stuff is really overkill.
  • Thanks for the advice! I will definitely do the locks for the cleaning supplies and get straps for the TV.  Does anyone know if there are particular ones for kids or does any old strap work?  I agree that some things seem like complete over kill!
