"Well, it happens to the best of us..."

That was the response we got from DH's grandmother when we told our families we are expecting.
Simultaneously, his grandfather had this look on his face...

image

Yeaaaah.. so, I don't get it. What does that even mean?? I'd like to think that they're just too old to know what the proper reaction/thing to say is, and are just totally senile and mean well.. but I couldn't help but be annoyed. Not to mention, my SIL thought their reactions were hilarious and everyone started laughing.. it was so awkward.

Luckily, everyone else was extremely excited, so I guess that's all that matters. But that reaction is just getting my panties in a bunch and I can't shake it.

Anyone else have interesting stories they'd like to share about finally making it public?

  • I texted my MIL (we rarely see them) the news and a sono pix yesterday at 11, still no response as of now!  Kind of annoyed my DH could care less.  But come on text back congrats at least!

  • @artichoken wow, that's terrible. Sorry you're dealing with that. Some people are just miserable and awful. It's tough to take their comment with a grain of salt though when words can be so hurtful.

  • My Grandmom didn't say anything weird to me but I later found out that she was very concerned for DH and I until she found out about the pregnancy. She expressed her concern often to my mom that she thought something was wrong with us because we had been married a year and she was pregnant after 3 months. She couldn't understand the concept of waiting.

  • Last time around my DH's grandma's boyfriend told me at 26 weeks "maybe you'll actually make it this time!" (Referring to my previous loss at 12.5w.). Old people.

  • My brother said awesome. *high five* and that was it.. My sister just said "when will you know the sex" and "you better hold out till my birthday." Her birthday is may 17th and the DD is may 14th. Not much enthusiasm in my family lol but it's about what I expected. OP I love that picture of Jenna Marbles! She's hilarious!

  • My MIL said congratulations and back to business as usual. I see her almost everyday(she lives around the corner) and she has never brought it up again. It's weird. My family is the complete opposite so I don't know how to take their reactions. My husband thinks it's weird, too.
  • With my first my grandmothers reaction was 'are your nipples brown that's how I knew I was pregnant the first time'
This time she said something about having a boy because she only has great grand daughters.

  • DD wore a big sister shirt the day we told MIL, SIL and BIL. No one said anything about the shirt after being over for quite a while. DH finally spoke up and told them. MIL and BIL then admitted to seeing her shirt and not understanding why she was wearing it...

  • I just had a flood of memories of all of the idiotic things my ILs have said to me. They have always been excited (this is #3....4 if we count my 12W mc) but they have NO FILTER.

Not to change the direction of this thread, but the worst comment from my MIL was Christmas of 2008 (DD was born that July of 2008) and my MIL said "You are looking great" (I was in shock! WHAT?? a compliment from my MIL?? this is new!) and then she quickly added "I just remember what you looked like when you left the hospital" and she made a disgusted face.

  • My grandma clapped and said she was excited for us, quickly followed by "Let's not get too excited, though. We all know a lot of times it doesn't work out this early." We were a little over 6 weeks when we told her, b/c we wanted to do it in person and wouldn't see her again until Thanksgiving. Those stone-hearted old Germans, man.

  • When I told my IL's, my MIL ran right past my husband, never saying congratulations, but I received a hug and kiss.  My FIL is a different story, he just sat there with a puzzled look on his face....still hasn't said congrats to me and its been 3 weeks......LOL

  • Omg...there are some pretty crazy reactions here. With my first I called to tell my mom. She was the last one I told because I knew her reaction would be bad. Bad mistake, should have told her first so the happy reactions would lift me back up. She said "thanks for ruining my day." Thanks mommy dearest. FYI, I was 27 and been with DH (who everybody loves) for 8 years, and recently gotten married. She was acting like I was a teenager with a deadbeat baby daddy. Oh well, everybody was good with #2. Maybe I'll have something Interesting to add to this once I share the news of #3. =)

  • I get the "Really? While you're still in school? But you're so young. You sure you don't want to enjoy being married first?" ...like it's even an option. and yes we did plan this. and yes. i can do this. and yes thank you very much for your opinion.
But our families are very excited so that's nice :)
  • With my first I told my parents over lunch. We were moving 9 hours away and they knew that we had been trying for a year and a half so we told them really early. My mom read the note and just sat there. My dad said "are you pregnant? How do you know?" "Um... like 5 pregnancy tests" "well, if something goes wrong, at least you know you CAN get pregnant" gee thanks dad. Needless to say we're waiting until 12 weeks to tell anyone this time.
  • My grandmother who is 75 and is the most active old person I know, she still drives grain truck on the farm for heaven's sake said the following upon learning her first great grandbaby was due in May "oh I'm so excited, I hope I live that long"... Cue the Debbie downer music, old people be weird!
  • Some of these stories are hilarious, some are sad, either way I enjoyed reading and wish I had something fun to add (sorry about the unintentional haiku there LOL).  GL to everyone!
  • DH had been a little unsure of his own fertility, so when I told him, he looked down at his junk and said, "YOU CAN SWIM!"

Not entirely the reaction I'd been hoping for.  I did get the big hug etc. just after, though :-P

I've also had the "well, if it doesn't work out, at least you know you CAN get pregnant", which I know is a reference to my sister's multiple losses and fertility struggles.

  • Deanna1313 I can totally relate. We told my IL's about 6 weeks ago and my MIL has yet to check on me or call :( Then my FIL emailed my hubby and asked if he was sure I was pregnant and had I been to the doctors to verify :-/ needless to say we were both upset and disappointed by his reaction. But they are distant and cold anyway.
On the other hand my family is the total opposite, my parents and siblings were VERY excited and supportive. Thank God for that :D
