Car rides

So I'm pretty sure I have the only baby who won't nap in the car. Today after she was woken up after 10 minutes of napping by my awesome dogs, she would not go back to sleep. So I thought a car ride might do the trick. I could tell she was tired. We drove to the store (she was good and played w her toys) got a few things. I could tell she was fading fast, and thought for sure she'd pass out, but then decided to scream bloody murder half of the ride home (10 minutes). We are making a three hour trip on Friday by ourselves and I'm concerned it won't go well since she can't even handle a 20 minute trip to the store. What do you do that makes traveling work?

Re: Car rides

  • You aren't alone!! I thought I was the only one with a LO that hates the car. It's like roulette with us! He either passes out or SCREAMS

  • Both my kids are like that sometimes. It's very exhausting to plan a simple shopping trip at this age. It gets much better when they are older.
  • My lo has to be super tired to sleep in the car. If he's not then he will cry. The only advice I can suggest is to wear hher out before the he car ride. If you think she's tired keep playing with her and keep her awake until you're about to hit the road. Good luck! I know how frustrating it can be for sure.
  • My LO hates the car too!!! Wah!!!

  • DD has started crying lately whenever we put her in the carseat.  If I can distract her with a binky and a toy, she'll calm down and then usually pass out after a few minutes of driving.

  • We had to switch to a convertible seat and ever since then there are tears with every car trip.
  • If we pull the cover of the car seat in front of him, it helps calm him down and make him fall asleep. I think it's because it blocks out all of the overstimulating things (trees, lights, etc) that he can see when the car is moving. If there is someone else in the car, it also helps to have them make the cover move back and forth. The movement helps him focus on it.

Music also helps with us. I turn up the music really loud and he stops crying to listen to it and will fall asleep.
  • Well, our big trip was this past weekend. Three hours on the way there, she slept the whole time...it was awesome. On the way home she only slept for two hours then I pulled over to feed her and she only ate a little bit, and pretty much screamed the rest of the way. I pulled over to check on her a few times but she was fine. Not so much fun driving like that. At least she was good most of the trip!
  • Glad it went well (mostly)!

  • LO isn't a huge car ride fan. She'll be fine, but if she's in a mood she'll flip out or if she's tired she'll cry for q10-15 min before sleeping for 20 then up again. i try and avoid car rides around her nap time
