induced at 37 weeks because of gestational hypertension?

I had my dr. appt yesterday and for the second week in a row my bp was high. Last week it was better after I laid down but this week it was still 150/81after 20 minutes of laying on my left side. The dr. ordered blood work and a 24 urine sample and basically said if they find protein they will induce me. I have never had protein in my urine previously so I'm guessing it will come back fine, but I don't know if they will induce you for high bp without protein in urine? Have any of you ladies had similar experiences? I know I should have asked the dr yesterday but I was so overwhelmed once I heard them mention being induced I just blanked out on my questions

  • Pih should have monitoring, bi weekly nst and weekly afi and acog recommends delivery between 37 and 39+6 so will depend on how you and baby are doing and what your doc tends to do (we did 38 or when severe range until our obs got the new policy oking delivery at 37, which i think needs another indication, but that's coming from the peds perspective, i haven't had to induce any of my ladies for this recently), but it won't resolve until you deliver so that's the treatment for you.

I had almost the exact same thing happen to me except that my BP went up at 38 week.  No systems of pre-e, but my doctor pushed to get me induced at 40 weeks.  The induction did not work and I went home still pregnant.  I posted about this on the natural birth board, I am really trying for a natural birth.  Below is the link to my post, it is long.  I am going to wait before getting induced again.  My BP did go back to normal when I was on my left side, not sure what that means.
My doctor also had me go to L&D to have my blood pressure monitored for 3-4 hours to get a better idea what my BP is over a longer time frame.  Might be something else to try before deciding on the induction.

I hope you find the right answer for you.

I don't have gestational hypertension since I've had htn pre-pregnancy but my doctor said because my BP is out of control even on meds, I'm being induced today at 38+1. We talked about this at my 36+5 appointment. He said it's recommended between 37-39.5 weeks when dealing with high blood pressure. You might have a little protein in your 24 collection but usually as long as it's not over 300mg, it's ok- so I've been told by my ob and MFM doc. Good luck with everything. I think it is pretty common to induce a little early to reduce your bp getting even worse and harming you/baby.

  • They will more than likely monitor you with NSTs if you are showing no other signs of pre-e. I go for weekly NSTs and they are twice a week. I did the same with DD.

I have pregnancy induced hypertension and have been on medication since 13 or so weeks. My BP has been 148/89 (on my medication) and I have been told multiple times that BP is fine. I am wondering why your doctor is concerned.... what is your normal BP?

I was put on bed rest with DD for high BP. They had me lay on my left side only. This helps improve blood flow to the placenta since one of the concerns with high BP is that the placenta is not getting enough blood since blood is being pushed else where.

  • I was put on bed rest at 34 weeks due to high BP I was monitored much more closely and checked weekly for protein in my urine. Protein means preeclampsia which is very serious and they will typically send you straight to L&D if they find you have that. Preeclampsia can show up at any time without warning and sometimes without symptoms so the only way you know for sure is to check for protein.

I never had protein in my urine but I had all the symptoms of preeclampsia along with high BP. Even though I didn't have protein, my symptoms like double vision were severe enough that I was induced at 39w3d.
  • I am being induced at 38 weeks due to my bp issues. I'm not on any medication for it and it's in the range of 138/84 and the highest it's been was 148/88. I go in for weekly NST to monitor both me and my baby girl. I've had the 24 hour urine each week and so far that's been clean. No symptoms of vision, headaches, or swelling yet. I'm currently 35 weeks so I'm trying to stay calm and hang in there 3 more weeks!
